For those of you not following me on Facebook, as of the Summer of 2019 I've moved to Central WA, to a tiny mountain town of less than 1,000 people.

I will be covering my exploits here in the Cascades, as I try to further reduce my impact on the environment. With the same attitude, just at a higher altitude!

DivaCup Challenge 2008

DivaCup Challenge 2008It's been almost a year since the first DivaCup Challenge started. I love, love, love my DivaCup and cannot imagine going back to disposables.

To be honest, I was completely abhorred by the idea of this little piece of silicone at first, but once I took the plunge (so to speak) I was immediately enamored. I only hope that other women will try it for themselves. It's been totally life changing. And I don't say that about just anything.

At this time, about 43% of the almost 500 people that answered my latest poll used the DivaCup or the Keeper. The total for reusable menstrual products is 57%. First of all, I must say I am astounded that the percentage is as high as it is. It is probably due to the crunchiness of my readers, but even still. That's wonderful! Consider the savings to the environment, the sewage treatment plants, the landfills and to your bodies!

If I had any influence on the number of DivaCups being used I would be quite pleased, yet I'm not sure if I can take much credit in these numbers. Either way, I hope to increase that number even more if I can.

As such, I'm holding another DivaCup Challenge and giveaway for those who do not want to risk spending the money on something they are not sure about. But I'm not giving away just one DivaCup but five.

What's the catch? Well, to sign up to win a DivaCup you must pledge to use it for 3 months regardless of whether or not you win one. (For those of you participating in the Buy Nothing Challenge, since this replaces a whole bunch of disposable "necessities", it's an acceptable purchase.)

The challenge starts May 2008 to coincide with the Extreme Eco Challenge for those trying to eliminate their usage of paper products. To join the challenge, sign up in the comments. To enter the giveaway, you must have signed up by April 25th.

Actually, I'm not signing up to win one. I already have one and just wanted to say I love the fact that I can go through an entire period with no waste! No plastic. No paper. Nada. And, you were the one I first heard about them from so thank you!

I def. pledge to use the diva cup 3 months or more regardless if I win one or not! I was planning on buying one anyways, but needed a bit more coaxing!

SIGN ME UP!! :) :)

sign me up! I've been wanting to get one - winning one would be even better. I solemnly swear I will use it three months.

I'll try it. It'd be better if I won one! Either way, I can't use it right away because I'm still breastfeeding and haven't gotten the old "friend" back yet.... I've always hated pads and tampons, so when I do get it back I'll try the cup whether I win or not.

I've been using a Lunette (the Finish cup) since December. I have a question, though, maybe someone here can answer it. I go to yoga classes, and I was wondering if anyone had done shoulder stands and head stands with a diva cup in. I start yoga with an empty cup and don't bleed much, but the idea still seems a bit weird.

I think I will sit this one out Crunchy, and wait for the Devo cup.

I've been running down my disposables in anticipation of buying one, so sign me up. I'm glad this is an "acceptable purchase."

lacemase said...

Zip,

Remember that they do not recommend women do inversions during their menses. Unless you are only doing short inversions <1 minute, I would say sit it out until next week.

Burbanmom said...

Hey Crunchy, My birth control method doesn't leave me with much... ummmmm.... output, so I will join your ditching the disposables and switch from Natracare pantyliners to reusable (Glad-rag style) pantyliners for my low-flow TOTM. Just the kick in the pants I need to start sewing up stuff for Goods 4 Girls! :-)

If you're givin' em away I'll definitely try it!

I was planning to get one eventually but haven't found one locally, so this will be quality inspiration.

I just bought one!! I've been lurking on your site for a while now and had never even heard of a diva cup or anything like it until reading about it her. i just got it on monday at my local health food store! i'm so excited to try it. so i pledge to use it for 3 months!!

Sign me up for the challenge! I've been reading your posts for about a month now and just last week I read last years Diva Cup Challenge and have been mulling over the idea since then. Mulling over. I am ready.

Wendy said...

Well, just so you know, I use the DivaCup, and it is all your fault! I also use cloth pads (as a back-up), and that's your fault, too ;).

And, I LOVE them both. I was a little apprehensive about the DivaCup, because I was never a tampon user, but I actually feel "cleaner" during that time of month with the DivaCup ;).

Please don't sign me up, as I'm already a convert, but I did want to give credit where credit is due ;).

Unknown said...

I just started using the DivaCup--this is my second month using it. I can't believe how much I love it--the idea kind of creeped me out at first, but now... It's sooooo much more convenient than tampons or pads. You never have to worry about whether you brought enough tampons for the day--you've got the DivaCup, you're all set! (Ick... I sound like a commercial. Anyone feel up for running on the beach in soft focus, now?)

Melissa Anderson said...

I've been holding off on buying a diva cup because I can only find them on-line. I also thought you might send one to Rechelle I could pilfer it from her in her grossed out moment:) Anyway, I'm up for the challenge, but I have a question. I'm taking a pill where I only have a period every three months, so do I commit to nine months(or 3 cycles)?
Thanks! Melissa

Hi! I'd like to sign up. We just bought some snaps to make pads for my nearly-pubescent daughter and Goods4girls and while talking about which old towel to cut up, I mentioned the diva cup and my interest in getting one (after reading your blog). She was appalled! She said something to the effect of "Never stuffing anything up there!" So, I'd like to win one to use and prove my little darling wrong...and save her a menstruating-life of pad washing :). Oh yeah, I wouldn't mind not washing pads either.

Hi Zip,

I'm not Crunchy, but I do yoga and have used a Keeper for years.

All my yoga stuff says not to do inverted poses while having a period. Yoga Bible, Gaia DVD's (4), and a friend who got me started -- my references.

I bought one after reading about on your site also. I have to say I was a little aprehensive at first but - Oh my god, I wish I discovered this thing 20 years ago, what a difference. Definitely recommend to anyone who doesn't have one.

Okay, I'm signing up. I have not tried the Diva Cup yet because of the cost. Would love to win one! I pledge to use it for at least 3 months!

don't sign me up, I already have one! I had started using it back in 2006, but got pregnant and my diva cup wandered off to some dark corner of the house, never to be seen again. After 22 months, my period came back, so I went bak to the co-op to buy a new diva cup (not planning another baby, so should be able to keep track of this one). I stood in the aisle deciding between the diva cup and the keeper (I eventually chose diva, for no particular reason) and saw about 3 of my friends from the local moms club. Turns out I'm a diva cup missionary or something, because I spent about half an hour talking to various acquaintances about it in the middle of the store. I think I even convinced one of them.

And to think, I was shy as a child.

Jennifer said...

LOVE the Diva Cup! LOVE it! It's so much cleaner than tampons... and way more convenient than pads.

If you had held this a month earlier, I would have signed up for the drawing, as my dog dragged my diva cup out of my luggage and proceeded to decimate it... but I have already replaced it. It was almost 4 years old, though, so it was perhaps time.

I'll join to give moral support to those starting out for the first time... you'll never go back once you figure it out! I absolutely HATE when I forget to bring it on a short trip and have to use something else!

laurel said...

I really hate the waste I cause every month with disposable products. I have wanted to try the diva cup (I read about your last diva cup challenge, but didn't participate). Honestly, I am cheap, and didn't want to spend the money on something I didn't know if I would like (and obviously, can't return. Gross). But, even if I don't win one from you, I am ready to bite the bullet and give it a try. I have heard such good things...

mel said...

Yes, Crunchy, I think you CAN take credit for the high percentage of DivaCup users here... your challenge and the comments from readers were my reason for taking the plunge (ha!).

I've already gone through three cycles with it (I can't imagine going back!) and have already converted one friend.

For all of you on the fence: it is definitely worth it! A GREAT investment that you'll be thankful for every month. Or 35 days, in my case. ( ^_^ )

Anonymous said...

Please sign me up! I've been considering a diva for awhile. The 'learning curve' I've heard about with it has been intimidating me a little, though. So, it's time to get over that.

I've been lurking and benefitting from your spend nothing challenge. So, now I'm out in the open!

Anonymous said...

Alright sign me up. I have been contemplating this since I first found your blog and read the old posts. I found them at Whole foods and at 30.00 I was afraid that I would hate it and waste my $. Don't think they would take a return (yuck) even for store credit. My stash of the unfriendly products is nearly gone so I may as well commit. Here to hoping I win, but knowing the environment will win either way.

noradawn said...

Definitely count me in! I want to win one! I have been planning to use one for ages, but between breastfeeding and being pregnant, I've only had two periods since May '03. At least I haven't used anything disposable! Anyway, since my second child is 16 months old now, I'm totally expecting my cycle to restart at any given time. I will use the Diva for 3 months from the time my cycle starts up again, whether I win one or not.

Meg said...

sign me up! Your subtle influence has finally convinced me I should at least try it out - and if I can win one, so much the better! I swear to use it for at least 3 months.

I have several friends who have switched to the Diva and love it. I haven't tried it yet - worried about the cost and not liking it but I'm getting closer and closer to trying it all the time. So if I won it - that would be perfect!!

Zip, you're not supposed to do 'inverted' poses when you're menstruating. So no problem!

I'm not signing up, but just chiming in to say that diva cups rock! I just finished my first cycle using one and already can't imagine going back to anything else.

Jennifer said...

Ok, I'll try again. I already have one and I tried it after reading about it here. I like the idea, and I feel much guilt for going back to disposable pads. But I had some trouble getting it in and comfortable. And there's something about spending an hour in the bathroom with my 5-year-old outside the door constantly asking if I still want privacy that just takes all the fun out of this.

Anonymous said...

I feel like I'm missing out or something...

But hey, when you're pregnant and nursing, the diva cup has to wait.

I'm just glad that you're doing this again.

Jenna said...

Okay, sign me up. I've been on the fence about it because with my birth control my periods are really very light (maximum of three days), so the cost seemed a little excessive. But if I could win one I would definitely use it... and if I don't win one it might be a few months before I can buy it, but I will and will use it (I'm guessing by everyone's glowing recommendations) for more than three months.

Danielle said...

This was one of the few New Year's resolutions I kept. I bought a mooncup and have been using it ever since. I'm also trying to make some pantie liners to protect against leakage (and to send to you!), but I'm still working on perfecting the design.

Thanks for all the work you do for positive change in the world!

Chile said...

I'm using mine anyway, so you can list me if you want. No need to include me in the drawing, however, since I can only use one at a time. (Doesn't that just bring up a pretty little picture?!)

And I'm getting rid of lots of crap around here....far more than just 1/4 of what there was...hint, hint!

Anonymous said...

Does a diva cup work for someone with excessive flow and clots during their period?

AleciaMarie said...

OK ok you got me. I have been planning on switching over to the DC for a while now but my procrastination has taken the drivers seat. BUT yes, I will pledge to get off my sorry butt and start to be a Diva ;)

S.N. said...

Sign me up. I have been letting my disposable products run low thinking of trading up for a diva cup. The prospect of winning one is just the push I need! Three months using it either way (though Im sure it will become permanent once I try it out).

Anonymous said...

Ok, sign me up, too. I have been hesitant to use this since I had a bad experience with the sea sponge years ago (in place of a tampon) but I don't like using all the disposable stuff every month. I'm basically a fence-sitter on this but I think it's time to commit and do the diva cup!

Anonymous said...

Okay sign me up. Even though I am still apprehensive, I pledge to use the diva cup for three months.

Anonymous said...

Oh yes, please sign me up! This is just the push I needed. I have used Instead before and I am guessing it is the same other than not being disposable. I pledge to try it for 3 months as soon as I start again, I am still nursing at the moment.

i am going to sign up, and if I win, I pledge to use it for 3 months regardless if I like it or not.

I have not been swayed yet to try the diva cup. for some reason, i can't get how it actually works with out leaking. this is going to be graphic, but, how does the blood manage to go exactly into the cup and not around it? i can't see how it works...

reading about the reuseable cloth pads, I was going to try making some of those, to at least cut down on waste. as of now, I use ob tampons, so at least there is no applicator collecting in some trash heap somewhere.

Anonymous said...

Alright, alright. You ladies are very convincing! I have been wanting to try one of these things for awhile now anyway, and a freebie (that comes with a mandatory use period) would be just the motivator I need.
So please sign me up, Crunchy! I do hate all the paper products I go through every month. Change is good!
(And yet, this is one contest I'm a little scared to win!)

Wow. I thought we were a pretty "green" family since we use cloth diapers, shop with canvas bags and recycle or freecycle almost everything. Then I stumbled upon your site last week. Little did I know there was SO much more we could do. I think that your cold-turkey challenges from yesterday could be a recipe for a "whole lot of arguments" right now in my family, though I'd like to work towards all of them, but the Diva cup is something I can do even though I'd never even considered it before. Sign me up. I'd love to win, but I'll try it regardless. Thanks!

DIVA CUP HAS A ONE YEAR GUARANTEE RETURN POLICY.

Yes, you read that right. You can return your cup to Diva within one year if you don't just love it.

So jump in to the challenge, ladies! I'm already a convert but wanted to cheer you all on...

My Dearest Crunchy,

I think you underestimate yourself! I am using a diva cup and reusable cloth pads as backup, and it's definitely due to your influence. I do love them, and would not go back, even if they were equally impact friendly. Not to sound weird, but it feels more respectful of my feminine self not to view my cycles in terms of "waste". Just my $0.02 (USD).

@anonymous, re: heavy flows, the Diva Cup site says:

The DivaCup™ works very well for women with light or heavy flows. The DivaCup™ holds one full once and the average women only flows about three to four ounces in her entire cycle. For most women the cup is not even half full after 12 hours.

Women with heavy flows will simply need to empty the cup more often. The convenient measurement lines in ounces and millilitres will allow women to actually keep track of how much flow there is, and will finally be able to tell their doctor what is really happening in their cycle.

Many women who suffer from heavy painful periods from conditions such as endometriosis have reported wonderful results with The DivaCup™ as well as less cramping. Since The DivaCup™ sits low in the vaginal canal it does not block the flow from coming out like a tampon does, but allows the flow to come out naturally and simply catches and stores it in the cup.

Anonymous said...

Please sign me up! I've been nursing/and or pregnant for the last three years, so I haven't needed one. But I planned to buy one as soon as things got crackin' again! I pledge to use one for three months once my period starts again! (Does that count?)

I couldn't live without my Diva Cup! Shortly after purchasing my cup I got a nasty stomach flu, and thought I'd use my standard tampon - because it was familiar and easier... or so I thought. One night of return to tampon use was enough to convince me that I never wanted to use anything but the Diva Cup ever again!

I pledge to never return to Tampons again!

shamrockmom said...

I would love to try the Diva cup--I had something like it 15-20 years ago but don't know where it went....it worked great, but my periods were not that heavy. I also remember it being flatter(?) Now I am an old granola mommy in perimenopause, and my period is much heavier and the time between each is shorter. Hormones are not an option for me--family breast cancer history. I will be interested to see how it works given my current circumstances.

I've been hesitant to purchase a Diva Cup after a scare 10 yrs. ago with a similiar cup- forgot the name but it was one of the first cups! It had to be retrieved by my now husband. I'd love to win not one but five! I pledge today. Thx.

Theresa said...

Don't sign me up! I have one already, courtesy of the first Diva Cup challenge. I use it every cycle, although I do revert to tampons on heavy flow days that coincide with work days, because, well, the cup has 'runneth over' in a couple hours on those days. But otherwise, the Cup is fantastic! And I'm hooked on Luna Pads now too. My whole outlook on menstruation has changed since using the Cup and the LunaPads - I don't see it as "the curse" anymore, but part of the natural cycle of things. (Damn you, feminine 'hygiene' industry for making me feel 'unhygienic' in the first place!)

You are unfailingly generous, Crunchy. Thank you.

Anonymous said...

I promise to give it a good try if I win. I bought a Keeper last year, tried it two different times over 2 months and had a hard time with it. I could never get it comfortable, and I know this is strange, but I got an UTI each month I tried it. I think things like that press on my urinary tract in a strange way and cause problems. I've wanted to try the Diva to see if it's better, but have not wanted/been able to spend the money.

Sign me up!

In regards to yoga and menstration, inverted poses are not recommended because it can stop your flow temporarily because of the whole gravity thing. I dunno if that's a problem or just an oddity. Anyway, it's not recommended by the yoga powers that be.

I've used mine off and on for over two years and finally gave up on it entirely a couple months ago. It's painful to remove, leaks a lot and it takes forever to get a good seal (that still leaks). I've always wondered if I should have bought the smaller size but I don't want to spend $30 and have the same problems.

Not the glowing review others have but I've heard a couple similar complaints about it now and again, so I can't be the only one.

Anonymous said...

I don't have one, and I have to admit that I'd rather deal with disposable pads. I know, I know. BUT, should I be chosen, I cross my heart promise to use the diva cup for a full three months. I promise to give the diva cup an honest try.

Just chiming in here to say how great the Diva cup is. I agree about the life changing thing. I can't believe I went so long without one. I'd be lost without it, and would recommend it to anyone! I don't need another for myself, but if I win, I'd give it to a good friend of mine who suffered a terrible loss recently and can't afford one but wishes to try it. So I guess I'm signing up! I'm in - I'll use a diva cup / keeper for 3 months (unless, of course, I am lucky enough to get pregnant "on schedule" - in which case I'll resume the challenge when appropriate). I don't have one, although I'll probably get one now (via internet). If I WERE to win, though, I would gladly give the new one away to someone who I could convince to use it (anyone who knows me wouldn't be surprised - us cyclists are a bit 'free' with the biological info). I've been meaning to do this for years now, so maybe this will finally get my butt in gear.

i'm definitely down for the challenge. i was going to get one anyways once i got myself out of debt. this works well, since i can't afford one anytime soon... in case anyone is wondering: i spoke to a saleperson at grassroots in toronto who said that diva cup has a 1yr waranty, so if you use it and don't like it, you can still return it (washed and in the box, obviously). that might be an incentive for those who are worried that they might not like it...

OK, sign me up too! I've been wavering since your last challenge, because I mostly use cloth pads already, with just a few tampons used each month. In fact, your earlier challenge inspired me to use the cloth pads more each month and reduce tampon use. I have a pretty big stash of Natracare organic tampons and thought that maybe I had enough to last me however many years I have left (about ten, probably). But I've decided to go for it -- extra tampons have to be about a good a future barter item as it gets... Someone help me with the size issue -- I'm in my mid-40s (bigger size?) but have never been pregnant (smaller size?). Recommendations? Thanks...

I will sign up and pledge to use it for 3 months starting whenever I get one. I don't have any money right now due to the fact that all my bills just got paid, and I will have to wait for it to be shipped, as there are no stores in my city that sell them. But I'm in anyways.

i actually have a moon cup but have not had an occasion to use it yet. my 16 month old son still nurses quite a bit and i've yet to have a postpartum period. so...i plan on giving it a try once my periods return, but for now i'm just happy i don't have to deal with it. /knocking wood/ (so feel free to sign me up or not since i don't know if i'll be actively participating.)

I'm not signing up because I already have one - I bought it back in Decemberish because of things people kept saying on another site, but I'll just toss in that once I got used to it, I love it - though the first month I hated it and it took a lot of adjusting.

Crunchy, you most definitely are the reason I use the Diva Cup. I never heard of it before I read it here. Now I cannot imagine my life without it. For the first time since using it, I'm out of town while needing it. How wonderful to not have to pack boxes and bags of yukky scratchy over-bleached products. Tuck the cup (in it's bag) in the purse..... viola!

Miss Sub said...

....I need to push to try it. I'm scared! can I pledge to try it?

I am not signing up to win one. The first time I saw it on your website, I said ewwwwww! But I took the plunge cup a few months ago. LOVE it, environmental sanity is just icing on the cake.

One day I was in a local aquarium with my kids. Went into the stall with my 3 year old and did my Diva cup thing. My little girl, who has not learned to modulate her voice, yelled, "Mama, did it go into your butt?" Embarrassed, I said no. She followed up, "Mama, is that your penis?" I almost died right there and then.

Anonymous said...

I'll give it a whirl. I was thinking about getting one anyway, as I'm going backpacking in Africa for about seven weeks this summer and really don't want to have to deal with tampons during that time. The question is: does DivaCup ship to the UK?

So, please, Ms. Chicken, sign me up!

Lisa said...

I will sign up, although I have been using it for about a year. I have to be honest, most of the time I love it but there are times when it is not in right and it pushes against my bladder and it is seriously very uncomfortable...I still try though and for the most part it works great and I do feel a bit cleaner.

I would sign up, but I'm just about to have a baby, and I don't think I'm allowed to use anything "insertable" for after baby. Plus, I'm going to be nursing, so hoping my period doesn't come back for months. But I'm using cloth pads from now on.

ok- I've been thinking about trying it- so I guess this would be the push I need. Happy to see it's silicon too- can't use latex, which the older models I once considered were made of. So- sign me up for the "contest" and the challenge......

Just a thought but it is so amusing(and wonderful) to read the blogs such as this one, and Sharon's which are so very women-centered, and the comments which are mostly, although not all, by women. It is such a contrast to blogs such as Kunstler's where I don't feel at all welcome- very much a boys club atmosphere there.

Please sign me up, I've been wanting to switch.

But mostly I'm commenting to see if you have any advice about which DivaCup model I should use. I've had 2 miscarriages and don't know if that counts as having given birth vaginally... I asked DivaCup info and they weren't very helpful (except to say there is only a very small difference between the two models), but I thought I'd ask in case you happen to know this. Thanks!

I think I will give it another try. I used to have a Keeper about 5 years back but I gave up on it. I could never get it folded right and had difficulty getting it removed. Please sign me up. I would definitely use it for 3 months. I'm trying to use up my Sam's club packages of liners and tampons and I feel so guilty about all of the waste every month! I have been going back and forth about buying on since your last Divacup challenge, but my flow had been really light since having my nursing my second daughter and I didn't know if you could use them with a light flow (according to the info posted by "cheap like me" from the DC website you can use with light flows, so thanks!) Then I got an IUD (Mirena)and I know you have to be careful when removing them w/ IUD's so I've been nervous about wasting $ on one. If any IUD having DivaCup users out there want to chime in, I'd appreciate the advice/information. Thanks!

Ummm, can anyone tell me if they've used a similar product with problems? I bought such "similar product" and it worked great for the first two months but then my body sort of seemed to not like it anymore. Maybe a latex issue? Has anyone had similar problems? I did love it before the, ahem, issue.

I'm in! Have been using washable pads for over a year now and can't imagine how I put up with disposables for so long. Never liked tampons and only ever used them in emergencies but once I'd discovered non-disposable options always said I'd give the mooncup a go. Should do it now before I put it off - would be happy to keep just using pads but would love to have at least used the cup enough to be able to be more persuasive when trying to convince friends to also switch. The only person who's been interested (rather than completely grossed out) so far is my little brother and at least he then told all his female friends.

I'm a bit worried about trying one. I find tampons painful, and my one experience with a diaphragm left my husband with visible bruises and me...well, I could feel my cervix when I walked for a week.

But I promise that if I win one and can't wear it, I will switch to cloth reusables...I bet I'll get less chapped with them anyway.

OK, sign me up and show me where to buy one. I'm a couple of days late on the challenge, but at least my period isn't late.

This seems a little further along the spectrum than I've gone before but hey, it sound better than the washed fishing rags my Grandmoter gave me for my first period.

I don't use a cup, but I have been using washable pads for the past 5 years and I LOVE them!

I've never been a tampon girl, so wouldn't use a cup, but I would never resort to disposable pads again.

The washable ones are so soft, comfortable, there's no waste. I don't have to go to the store at silly o'clock because I've been caught out without supplies and I get free fertiliser for the garden from the soaking water.

I love that all these women are either using re usable protection or are considering it, as this is a topic I feel particularly passionate about :)

Allright, I am in. I found out about the Diva cup by way of your blog alone and thought I'd check the local grocer to see if they sold it and they do--for $40CDN. $5 here and there for tampons would add up to $40 in no time, I am sure,it's just a matter of dropping it all at once that gives me pause. I'd like to enter your draw and will vow to buy one and give it a try this year regardless if I win one or not. No waste and a purse with no ratty just-in-case tampon at the bottom anymore sound good enough to give it a shot.
Thanks for your blog btw,it's inspiring me to make better choices for our family of 5.

Okay, so today, I went to the local health food store to purchase the diva cup. To my surprise I did not see it anywhere so I proceeded to ask for help and it went like this-
ME: Excuse, where can I find the Diva Cup?

Assoc- Oh, we don't carry those. To be honest, we don't get a lot of people asking for them.

Me: That seems surprising, considering your selection.

Assoc- Yeah...well...we used to carry it but didn't get many people buying it. And, to be honest, it's really gross! (Saying this with disgust and no support whatsoever!)

Me: Well, we don't think so- do we Tristan (talking to my son- walking away).

I was quite insulted and left the store immediately. I wasn't asking for an opinion for crying out loud! I then came home to do research...went to divacup.com tried to locate a store- and whatta ya know, my local food store is listed. Then there's the Whole Food's market about 1 hr. away and I've been weaning myself from them since I have to drive so far. But, I may have to reconsider especially after today!! I couldn't find them at Target and don't know if the regular grocery store carry's them but I surely would have thought the local health food store would have them!! Argh!! So, my quest continue's...

Ok, Crunchy. I accepted your challenge. I went out and bought one and tried it. OMG did it hurt. So I thought it was a fluke. Tried it again the next day figuring I must have done something wrong the first time. So painful. It gave me the worst cramps ever which ended after I took it out (which in and of itself felt like my insides were being vacuumed out). Has anyone else has this experience? This was awful! Any suggestions?

Anonymous said...

I'm obviously not signing up for the contest, but I just bought the Mooncup UK and LOVE IT! I can't believe I waited so long to try it out. :)

Moonwaves said...

Well, the cup has been bought, now just need to wait a couple of weeks to need to use it. I'm still a bit dubious about using it but am going to give it a go. I'm still very overweight and kind of nervous I won't be agile enough to manage getting it in and out. Not sure that the kind of contortions I have in mind will be necessary but hey, rationality is not always my forte!

For the anonymous poster who was having problems, I've heard that the customer support people are fantastic and you can email them (if you'd rather not speak in person to someone) and they're great at addressing your issues and helping with tips and hints. Re the suction effect, I believe that happens if the seal hasn't been broken before you try to remove it i.e. you need to squeeze it a little bit to release the vacuum and help it to come out easily. It's well illustrated in the leaflet I got with my mooncup so I'm hoping I won't have any issues when I do get to use it. Most of my info comes from reading the very long thread on the itsnoteasybeinggreen forum. Good luck.

@Christine F. - There's an entire LiveJournal community of IUD users, many of whom swear by the DivaCup for spotting. So yes, you need to be a little careful combining the Diva and an IUD, but it's totally doable.

I'm afraid I'd just fail another challenge here. I've owned a Keeper for several years, but since my third baby, I just can't make it work. For three days it just fills up and pops back out before I can get off the toilet. Not that anyone wanted to know that... I hate using so many tampons and pads, too -- I go through a super plus AND a heavy pad in a single hour during the active part of the day. Maybe I should wear skirts during my period and wear my kid's premium-sized (read: huge) cloth diapers instead.

OK, month two down and only one minor problem, primarily due to me not putting the thing in right. The best part? I stayed at my sister's future in-laws this weekend and did not have to bring anything extra, freak out, or hide any yucky feminine products.

p.s. cutting the tip off a little bit helped with comfortability a LOT.

Hey Crunchy! Just wanted to let you know that I am using the Diva Cup for the first time and I LOVE IT!! I had never even heard of the Diva before reading your challenge so THANK YOU!!! Asked DH for one for my birthday and I got it! It makes me sick to think of the waste that my period has created over the years and I am thrilled that there is FINALLY an alternative. I was a little freaked about using it at first - it just seemed, well, gross! But it is easy to use, comfortable, and NO IMPACT! I will never buy another pad or tampon! THANK YOU!!! THANK YOU!!! THANK YOU!!!

A. Brown said...

I keep hearing about this challenge/contest from other bloggers and I finally remembered to check it out lol. I think it's very encouraging that you are promoting the use of reusable feminine products so heartily. Why not, right?

I actually use a sea sponge, although not currently because I'm pregnant, because I'm not too sure how a Keeper or Diva cup would fit. I'm really excited to go back to sponge use when the time comes.

It would seem strange to say this but you probably understand it; I found that when I was regularly using this method I felt very feminine. At first I was a little squicked by the whole process I admit, but in no time at all I realized how much more in touch I was with being a woman.

Props to ye, deary.

Turns out that reading about everyone's experiences for three months before I finally got my own was all the figuring out it took. At first I didn't think that it could possibly have been correct. It seemed too easy. All the tips on here are seriously invaluable...and the push down fold is the only one i've used (Crunchy - I'm pretty sure at this point I would believe anything you tell me about this super cup!)

this is fantastic. thank you.
