Blog Update!
For those of you not following me on Facebook, as of the Summer of 2019 I've moved to Central WA, to a tiny mountain town of less than 1,000 people.

I will be covering my exploits here in the Cascades, as I try to further reduce my impact on the environment. With the same attitude, just at a higher altitude!

About

I am an ex-urban homesteader, recently moved from Seattle to Central Washington with my two children after my husband passed away in 2018 from a long fight against cancer. I've spent over a decade trying to lower our impact on the environment and reduce our exposure to toxic chemicals. I started this blog in 2007 and, save for the huge gaps where I've neglected it, it's been a non-stop thrill ride ever since.

Now that I'm in a small mountain town of less than 1,000 people, I will be refocusing my attempts to grow what food I can at elevation and with a short growing season and discuss the challenges that living in a rural area present, such as access to recycling, organic and bulk foods and the like.

Back in 2011, I wrote a book about toxins in the environment and how pervasive they are, covering such chemicals as phthalates, heavy metals, parabens, pesticides and more. The book starts and ends with me getting toxic body burden testing done to see if we have any control over our toxic exposure and how difficult it is to eradicate them from our environment. The book, The Non-Toxic Avenger: What you don't know can hurt you, was published in November 2011 from New Society Publishers.

I have had the fortune of being interviewed as a green expert by major media outlets such as The New York Times, USA Today, The Scientific American and even the National Enquirer (please see the Media page for full listing, if you are interested). Technorati kindly listed this blog in the top 3,000 blogs at one point in time, and I get a goodly amount of traffic - know you are in good company as there are about 70,000 other readers out there.
