Blog Update!
For those of you not following me on Facebook, as of the Summer of 2019 I've moved to Central WA, to a tiny mountain town of less than 1,000 people.

I will be covering my exploits here in the Cascades, as I try to further reduce my impact on the environment. With the same attitude, just at a higher altitude!

Hang 'Em Dry Clothing Confessional #2

This weekend wraps up the second week of October's Hang 'Em Dry Challenge where you can pledge to line or otherwise air dry all your laundry for the month.

Since I know it's unrealistic to completely line dry all of your laundry on some days, I'm letting you all do a weekly confessional so that, if you do end up caving in and using the dryer, you can confess, get it off your chest and start up again instead of feeling like you're a cheater and just quitting altogether. We all have issues that crop up and sometimes using the dryer is a necessity.

This week we had a tad of a snafu in that we thought our water heater was leaking. It ended up being something else (the real problem was laughable and I'm not confessing it here :), but needless to say we used a few towels in the process. And, it's been pouring rain so drying has been slow. So, I'm behind on laundry but I haven't used the dryer more than I had planned.

Total dryer time used: 48 minutes
Total dryer time saved: 450 minutes (7.5 hours!)

How's the challenge going for you? Feel free to blog and post a link here, or just say how it's going in the comments!

We line dry everything unless the weather is extremely bad. So here we are in the Sunshine State of Australia under a severe weather warning with rainy days on end. Most of the stuff is hung in the breezeway but the dreaded machine has been used three times in the last two days!

60 minutes of dryer time here this week. I had to put some quilting fabrics through the dryer to shrink them before I used them. I wish they'd come pre-shrunk so I could skip this step in quilt-making and sewing in general. It has to be more efficient to pre-shrink lots and lots of fabrics together before they're sold than it is for sewists to have to do so after purchasing their fabrics. Economy of scale and all.

Confess: I used the dryer for one load this last week and hung the other 6 loads. My fault for not scheduling my laundry better.

Things have been biting me in my sleep, so I washed all my bedding. As it was pouring rain in the northeast at the beginning of the week, and I wanted to make sure all the creatures were dead, I used the dryer. 60 minutes x 2 dryers. I hung up my usual weekly load, though, so that's 60 minutes saved.

3 minutes each times 5 loads, so 15 minutes dryer use. I haven't used the dryer regularly in so long, though, that I have NO idea how long it would take to dry each load in the dryer - maybe 1.5 hrs each?

I live in an apartment now and previously when I was in a house I was actually LESS likely to hang dry my laundry, simply because I would've had to carry the damp laundry upstairs from the basement (the basement was buggy and gross, no way was I hanging clean clothes down there).

In my apartment, we have a bathroom close to the washer/dryer combo and I keep a expanding rack in the bathtub and I have two hanging racks from IKEA (so cute, shaped like octopi) that hang from the curtain rod.

Works pretty well for just the two of us :D

We line dry everything inside on drying racks. We only have two of them, so we do one load every two days.

I don't really understand why it wouldn't be possible to line dry everything? I mean, in a fairly regular climate anyway. I've never owned a drier, it seems like such a luxury.

Didn't line dry the sheets 'cause there's no room, so that was 32 minutes dryer time, making a total of 54 minutes so far this month. Line dried all the clothes. Still need to get a second rack so I can do more than one load at a time!

I, too, am still "hanging in there" :) Even with the digective problems of one of my cats, and the resulting "errant poop", I managed to avoid the dryer.

Though I did resort to borrowing a carpet steam-cleaner. In the long run, I think the half hour with a steam cleaner to save a wool rug is a fair trade and keeps me from replacing the old carpet with newer, synthetic, petroleum-based crap.

I have no dryer and have not had one in my house since 1989. Family of 3. Live in Florida, but we do have a hell of a rainy season. Florida houses also tend to be small. Mine is 800 square feet with no attic, nor basement. I get by with a couple of those wooden accordion pop-up contraptions when the weather is too humid or rainy. We have one bathroom, and I use the shower curtain rod to air dry clothes on hangers. Makes putting them away nice and easy, and no wrinkles to iron. Mater of fact I NEVER iron!

It went bad last week ... over cast ... after a day and a half the diaper were still not dry. They went in the dryer 30+ min. Kids socks, underwear and few other items blew into the dirt/weeds (rewash). Sheets and towels went in the dryer ... next week I will do better. I did order another drying rack and if i cant find a better solution for the little things I am going to get an ikea octopus hanger.

17 loads of laundry with only 90 minutes of drying time and I'm feeling like a champ. Some things I've learned can be found here: click
