SodaStream Penguin review and giveaway

We've been using the Penguin soda maker from SodaStream for about three years now, mostly for making sparkling water that we add our own syrups to or for making some fabulous mojitos using the mint from our backyard.

It's convenient because we generally don't have sparkling water or tonic water on hand, so if we want to whip up something besides water, tea or coffee, we've got the penguin to chirp our way into sparkling goodness. Chirp you ask? Well, when you are carbonating the water, you know it's done when the penguin makes a chirping noise. The kids get pretty excited about it too, because it's like a little mini science experiment.

Anyway, we've also been known to make actual soda from it using their flavored syrups, mostly Root Beer, Cream Soda and the like. The cool thing about their soda syrups is that they use actual sugar instead of high fructose corn syrup and, if diet soda is your thang, they have that option as well, using Splenda as the sweetener.

They also have a new line of Sparkling Naturals in a bunch of fruity flavors like Orange Pineapple and Apple Mango, that I was able to try out. I normally don't go for regular sodas and diet sodas because I don't like all the artificial ingredients that tend to be in them, but the Sparkling Naturals literally have no artificial colors, flavors or sugars in them. You can check out the ingredients list here.

The reason why I really like the Penguin (besides the cute noises it makes) is the fact that the carafes are made out of glass. You get two with the SodaStream maker so you can have more than one flavor going at a time, plus you don't have to worry about plastics leaching into your beverage. One of the things I was concerned about when getting this product was replacing the cartridges. Well, it turns out we can exchange them at a kitchen store down the street from our place (you can see a map of where you can find their products), so it really ends up being super inexpensive if you tend to drink a lot of carbonated beverages. And you will go through tons less plastic in the process.

Yeah! There's a Giveaway!
SodaStream has been nice enough to sponsor a giveaway of one of their Penguin Starter Kits that includes the:
  • Penguin Sparkling Water & Soda Machine
  • 2 Penguin Glass Carafes
  • 2 60 Liter Carbonators
  • Sparkling Naturals - Pink Grapefruit concentrate 750 ml
  • Sparkling Naturals - Orange Pineapple concentrate 750 ml
  • MyWater Flavor Essence - Variety pack
This starter set plus the soda mixes retail for $280 so I'm really excited about the opportunity to give this set away to one of my readers.

To be entered in this randomly drawn giveaway, please add your name to the comments of this post and tell me what your favorite sparkly beverage is. You have until midnight PST on Sunday, October 31st to enter this spooktacular giveaway. Good luck!

You don't even know how badly and for how long I've wanted one of these! But I just haven't been able to justify buying one (not new, at least) and have yet to find one on Craigslist or in a second hand store.

I will love your random number generator for ever and ever and ever if it picks me! :-D

Such an awesome giveaway! Thanks for the chance!

Well, man - again I have to say I love this product, but I have one, so don't enter me in the drawing!

I swear, I'm immune to "regular" advertising but between you and Beth Terry I have had lots of wants the last year or two. I finally got my Sodastream this summer after she posted about hers so glowingly a long time ago.

I rarely drink soda anymore because of all the sugar and crap in it but if I am having a carbonation frenzy then I will drink just about anything. Pepsi has been my favorite since I was little. The Pepsi vs Coke campaign back in the 80's is permanently embedded in my brain for some reason.
Anyways I really do not buy soda because of it's packaging. Aluminum or plastic either way I'm screwed. This would be awesome to win.

I have coveted one of these for ages! I love Izze Grapefruit & Izze Clementine, Dry Soda Blood Orange, Gin & Tonics and, sigh,Diet Coke (I'm trying...)

Jenette said...

I could do with out but my husbands soda habit would be improved by this gizmo! He drinks orange soda, cherrie coke, a few of the natural sodas and dr pepper ( I like that one too!)

Willow said...

Oh! I want to play! I don't like soda (too sweet!)but I love bubbly drinks. My favorite thing to drink that isn't beer is the Dry Soda because it is barely sweet. I'd love to win this so I can make soda that isn't too sweet.

I really wanted this, I looked at it for so long. But I can't buy it cause the cartridge exchange isn't available where I live. So I guess I'm sticking with canned soda, at least I don't drink it very often.

I had an old fashioned soda siphon for many years that I loved. Unfortunately, a clumsy friend broke it and I've been wanting to replace it ever since.

My favorite -- fresh raspberry syrup with sparkling soda over ice. YUM.

I have wanted one of these since I discovered they existed! Thanks for having a giveaway!

My favorite carbonated beverage is probably Jamaica (hibiscus) soda, but I love to drink plain carbonated water too!

Kristina said...

I don't know what my favorite is! I like Coke, and I love all kinds of carbonated fruity beverages. This sounds really cool. Thanks for the chance!

I want one of these so badly! My favorite carbonated drinks are ginger ale and root beer, but it has become almost impossible to find brands that are not sweetened with either HFCS or an artificial sweetener so I go without.

Sparkless said...

I didn't know I even wanted one until you made me want it! I'd say I'm more of a lemon lime type drink person. So any carbonated drink that has a hint of lemon or lime in it is my fave.

Anonymous said...

We make a lot of our own flavored syrups to mix with sparkling water. My favorite is lime. I have to be honest, I've never seen this gizmo. It is pretty nifty.

Oh, goodness. I want one of these so badly! I drink lots of Coke, and while I don't guilt myself for drinking it, I really do hate all the packaging. My partner likes all kinds of fruity concoctions, too. What a fabulous giveaway!

Wow, this is so awesome!!! My son has lots of allergies and intolerances, so I love seeing something I can actually make for him! We don't drink lots of soda, but I do like carbonation, which I get from La Croix water. My favorite flavor is grapefruit. While it taste great and is without all the added junk, it's expensive! It'd be way cooler to make your own :-) thanks for having this giveaway and introducing me to this fantastic thing! Breanna at Allergic Adventures

My husband told me about this product a couple weeks ago. We would love to buy one but can't justify the expense. We do not purchase soda at home but I do order it when we go out to eat. Mmmm I love root beer.

Keeping fingers crossed

I've cut soda out almost entirely, but this summer was treated to the most delightful mango soda at my parents' place. That's what the penguin would be tasked with making - mango soda!

I cut soda out also and I just drink the plain sparkling water. I love it!!

Well, usually I'm a sucker for Pepsi Throwback, which doesn't have HFCS but is problematic because of transport of water. But since you mentioned mojitos, I have to say that's my favorite sparkling beverage, with backyard mojito mint and very soon limes from my own dwarf tree!

This would be exciting to win this! I think the kids in particular would be enchanted by the penguin.

My favourite is Dominion's Rootbeer because it is local and they use sugar and not HFCS.

My secret addition, I love fizzy water, no flavors, no colors just lots and lots of bubbles!

Thanks for the chance to win this!!

Wow, what a neat product. I hadn't even heard of it until this post and just looked a their website. My husband and I like gin and tonics but we NEVER have any tonic at home. I also love sparkling water but can't really justify buying it when I can get regular old water for free!

My favorite sparkly drink is club soda with a tiny splash of Torani syrup- raspberry or cherry flavor! Yum. I hardly ever have it b/c I don't need to spend money on it, but I would love one of these!

Oh! My daughter would LOVE this - she is obsessed with Italian sodas and loves penguins!!

Our sparkly drink of choice here is the Italian soda, IF we have club soda. If not, we like Izze drinks and of course, the occasional Coca Cola.

Thanks for hosting such a fabulous giveaway!!

Kimmarie said...

Italian cream soda! Our local coffee shop got me hooked, then so as not to break the bank I googled the recipe; ) It would be wonderful to make the sparking water at home, thanks for this great giveaway!

Unknown said...

This would be awesome! I rarely ever drink cokes, but my husband loves them and has had a really hard time cutting back, but started getting kidney stones from not drinking anything else. He's just not a fan of water. He'll drink tons of coffee but it's a diuretic, and tea which is heavy in oxalic acid. If I could get him on the sparkling water bandwagon, that would be a lifesaver!

Lisa Under the Redwoods said...

Our favorite carbonated drink is sparkling water. This would be great because it would mean no more bottles to lug home and then recycle/downcycle.

DK said...

We do buy soda here with a fair amount or regularity. Usually we get cans because of the recycling issues with plastic bottles.Recycling is also hard to come by here so the cans get crushed to conserve space until we will be doing things around the area of where the place is that we can recycle.

Maria said...

Where have I been? I have never heard of this before! I would love to try it, as the only soda I drink is seltzer with lemon or lime or cranberry! Thank you!

jessjgh1 said...

Oh, I'd love this as a gift entry!
I love our soda stream, but I do wish we had gotten one with glass and the bigger bottles- we go thru a lot- often one bottle a day. After seltzing it up we put some lemon or lime in it and skip the mixes. We drink it with a splash of juice in it and have pretty much given up soda- except when out (that's my guilty pleasure).
I actually like Dr Pepper, but my real favorite sparkly drink would be fruity with lots of lemon or lime-- like a lime rickey- mmmmmm.

I'll mention I was very disappointed in the sample syrups that came with our machine. All of them had splenda in it- the regular ones seemed to be a mix of the 'sugar' and the splenda to keep them low calorie. But I could taste the splenda- yuck. It wasn't very clear from the packaging that this was the case- so I felt a little disappointed. There was a lot of advertising that everything was 'all natural' but then I kept tasting the splenda. Some were a little too sweet for me anyways. I was very glad to hear about the natural line that just came out and figured that maybe I would try one of those if the store we exchange canisters at has them- but a squeeze of lime or lemon has worked well.

OTOH should we be worried about the CO2 used for making seltzer??

Does beer count as a sparkly beverage? :)

We would go bonkers for a Penguin! My husband weaned himself off soda and onto Talking Rain (hooray!) to get away from all the sugar and artificial ingredients. A SodaStream would mean no more hauling heavy plastic bottles of "Bubble Water" home from the grocery store (hooray! hooray!).

Stacey Ho said...

Thanks for this review... we have been so tempted to buy this but I wasn't sure how it really worked. Mostly he just drinks the fizzy water plain, but sometimes he'll pop in some berries, fresh when we can, frozen the rest of the year. please enter me in your give-away!!!

Lisa Nelsen-Woods said...

Does local craft beer count as sparkly? It sure is bubbly...

I'm just going to say it but my favorite carbonated beverage (besides craft beer) is Dr. Pepper. I don't drink it often because of the ingredients, waste, and not so healthy aspects of drinking soda but if it's available when I'm out or at a family function I'll drink it. Soda Stream has a Dr. Pepper like drink that I've been looking at and dying to try.

So glad to read your review since I've been curious about this gadget ever since I saw it a year or so ago.

I'm not a soda person, but sometimes I like a little something different to make the water less... boring. So we tend to mix in a splash of fruit juice, or mint leaves, or whatever--but you know we've gone all schmancy when we crack open a can of fizzy water to doll up the juice/water concoctions. A SodaStream sounds like a great solution to my problem with either not enough cans of seltzer around, or bottles that go flat before we use 'em up!

I LOVE that penguin! Thanks for sharing. (Dear random generator, I think you're very sweet...)

My favorite main stream soda is the Pepsi Throwback with real sugar.

When I try to be good and stay natural I buy lemon lime soda and add organic lemon juice and agave for sweetener. It obviously doesn't give me the caffeine kick, but the healthier flavor and carbonation I want.

Sonya said...

I think my favourite soda lately is a raspberry soda that I got before we moved away from our little hippie town in Western NC. I don't remember the brand but it was from Earthfare. Ummmmm, this is an awesome giveaway! I remember having a SodaStream when I was a kid (25+ years ago) that my parents got from the Schwans' man of all people! Anyway, my husband has been whining about getting one of these for years! He'd be so thrilled if I surprised him with this!

Give me the penguin now.

I love Italian cream sodas...sparkling water, syrup, ice and half n half! so excited about this one!

Oh what the heck, I will admit my favorite sparkly beverage is Fresca - - which I don't let myself indulge in but for every few years because of the aspartame. Next to Fresca I'm a Dr. Pepper fan, but again rarely drink it. I have enjoyed the "dry soda" rhubarb and lemongrass, but only a couple of times.

sparkling grape juice is def. a favorite. I just love it.

Holy cow, this is awesome! I've been coveting one of these for the longest time. My husband drinks lime Mendota Springs like it's goin' out of style and I would love the chance to switch us over to a homemade option. When I was a kid, we had a Soda Stream machine and got our canisters and syrups from the Schwann's man. Many, many happy childhood memories.

this sounds fab! we use bottled carbonated water or club soda to make our beverages at home... my favorite is blackberry concentrate mixed with lemon juice and club soda. very refreshing!

I've very interested! I've seen them at work and have always coveted one.

We love sparkling grapefruit in this house.

I've never heard of this product, but it would be cool to use!

Oh how this product would be awesome to have in our home! We try to not drink soda, but it's my boyfriend's weak spot. We love Hansen's cherry vanilla soda - of course made with organic cane sugar so we feel a little less guilty.

Thanks for the giveaway!

I would love to have a Penguin. I drink seltzer water all the time. It satisfies my craving for carbonation with not calories. My children will use the seltzer mixed with cranberry juice to make their own soda. Just the other day my husband asked how we could reduce the number of seltzer cans that come through the house. I turn them in for the deposit but they accumulate quicker that I can return them. This little machine would be the answer to the question.

Peace!

I'd love one of these. Actually, my favorite sparkling beverage is champagne, but my husband doesn't drink alcohol and likes sweet sodas. I'd like to help him by winning something that makes it easy for him to drink his fizzy stuff without getting the HFCS.

Um, White Wine Spritzers...please don't judge...it's hot here in AZ and we need to stay hydrated while we enjoy a little wine on the patio! I've always wanted one of these...

My family goes through so much sparkling water! I have been looking at getting a soda machine but wasn't sure if any were worth the cost. it is nice to hear from someone else that they use theirs all of the time and like it. i love just plain sparkling water as i can drink way more than my eight glasses a day if it is sparkling :) My kids also love the Izze drinks. Would love to start making our own at home.

I have been lusting after one of these since I read about it at the fake plastic fish...
My favorite (and not even remotely heatlhy) sparkly beverage is cherry coke... the kind made with grenadine.
Anyway, how awesome to be able to give one of these away!

That is so cool!! My kids would think they'd died and gone to heaven yet I would know better...

Kendra said...

What a cool thing! I'd love one of these as we go through several liters of seltzer a weeK, and all that plastic drives me insame! But at least it's better for us than soda. Very cool blog by the way!

I have such fond memories of homemade pop as a teenager on my neighbor's farm. I tried it with my kids last week, using bottled sparkling water. They really enjoyed it, and I decided to try it more often for them. I'd LOVE this little guy - he is cute and right up our ally for healthier versions of treats in our house.

The sparkling beverage that tops my list right now is root beer. I have been trying several different ways to make this at home using yeasts. I have not been totally pleased with the results yet but came close this week with a different type of champagne yeast and the additional of a vanilla bean to the brew. I still can't get it sparkly enough. Almost flat root beer isn't really root beer. I would love to use something like this rather than milk jugs and yeast:)

This would be so wonderful to win. My daughter tells me how unhealthy soda is, and I have been wanting to stop drinking soda. This would give me a great reason to change my ways! No excuses.

Lesli said...

My favorite healthy sparkling drink is kombucha, which I make at home. Of course champagne comes to mind as a favorite sparkling drink, too, but doesn't warrant the healthy label. ;)

I'd love to win one of these, I bet my family would love it, as well.

Oh, this is such a fab giveaway…my kids would go nuts!!! Anyway, my favorite sparkly drink is Blue Sky cola and vodka.

It would be nice to have something to give my little one when Daddy is drinking "black water" and a better alternative for him as well!

I have been coveting a SodaStream for quite a while now!! I love soda, especially fruit flavored ones like lemon lime or grapefruit. I'm happy to read that your family has enjoyed it so much!

My absolute favorite sparkly drink is a blackberry italian soda with extra syrup. It's just soda water with blackberry torani syrup. SO GOOD!

I didn't even know such a thing existed, but that's so cool! I really love Diet Dr. Pepper as far as store bought, but I also really like to mix lime carbonated water with sour cherry syrup!

I love the blood orange soda from world market. Mmmmm.

Jimmy Erickson said...

Mt. Dew is probably my favorite carbonated drink, but lately I've been cutting back and drinking just carbonated water, so something like this would be perfect, and probably save me some money.

Oh. Oh. Oh.

Please pick me...I want this for my mom...she loves soda water....my favorite would be the apple mango....please pick me for my mom...you'd save the earth too, because she buys so many plastic bottles of soda water.

I am totally down for winning this. My favorite sparkling beverage is a glass with half carbonated water half juice. Yum!

My favorite is fizzy lemonade because I really don't want to have any tooth enamel left by the time I die.

Love your website, it is a breath of fresh air.

My favorites are blood orange italian sparkling soda, and ginger ale. I also do enjoy regular Coke. I would love to have a Penguin. Since our town stopped recycling glass I feel bad everytime we polish off an italian soda bottle.
Since I can sign up for the drawing, I'll sign up for the freeze challenge like you asked instead of just playing along. There shouldn't be more comments on the giveaway than the challenge...

I add soda water to my home-canned grape juice for a yummy sparkling drink. This SodaStream would also be awesome for mixing up a cola drink for queasy tummies during the flu season. My husband drinks a lot of cola when he is sick--all of it in plastic bottles.

Oooh! I've been wanting one of these for myself since I heard about them last Xmas. My favorite sparkly bev is currently Hansen's sparkling juice. I also really, really love Gosling Ginger Beer, but does my favorite "mixer" qualify?

Thanks for the opportunity. Your blog rocks!
Cheers,
Shannon

We love root beer, but I rarely buy it because it has junk and the bottles make me crazy. But there really is something about a root beer float that makes everyone smile!
