Blog Update!
For those of you not following me on Facebook, as of the Summer of 2019 I've moved to Central WA, to a tiny mountain town of less than 1,000 people.

I will be covering my exploits here in the Cascades, as I try to further reduce my impact on the environment. With the same attitude, just at a higher altitude!

Hot pink banana blossoms

For those of you who saw my Backyard Tropical Fruit video, I thought I'd show you some updated photos of the same plants bearing bananas as well as in bloom. Of course it makes sense that bananas have blossoms, but I didn't realize they were so perty.

Happy spring!

I hope to have homegrown bananas someday, but since I don't plan on ever moving away from Michigan, they'll have to be indoor bananas. Our current place isn't big enough to host large indoor plants, unfortunately.

Did you know those dang things are naturally radio active? Sometimes big loads of bananas coming into the country will set off the monitors. Still you'd have to eat way more than is humanly possible to hurt yourself.
Who knew??

Julie - No, I didn't. That's a weird factoid.

The radioactive thing is really funny. One of the questions on my last physics exam was how large the effective full-body dose would be if you ate an ideal banana per day. The answer I got was in the 10^-6 Sv/year range, if I remember correctly.

The flowers are fantastic! I'm so jealous of the climate at your brother's residence. Over here spring has gently begun coming :)

Ya know, I saw that first picture and said to my husband, "Bananas have nipples--I had no idea!"

He shook his head at my ridiculousness.

Nice! Have you eaten one? I haven't, so I'm going to buy one next time I'm out to the Asian market.

Shreela - Cavendish are the "regular" bananas you buy in stores. So, yes I've had a lot of them.

I'll see if the story states what kind of banana they use for the banana flower/blossoms they sell. I think it would be neat to grow a banana to be both fruit and veggie.
