Blog Update!
For those of you not following me on Facebook, as of the Summer of 2019 I've moved to Central WA, to a tiny mountain town of less than 1,000 people.

I will be covering my exploits here in the Cascades, as I try to further reduce my impact on the environment. With the same attitude, just at a higher altitude!

What's growing in the garden

Here's what currently outdoors and growing in the garden (versus the starts I have growing under lights in the basement). I thought I'd make a catalog of what's going on out there. It never really seems like I have much going on and, this early in the year, only a few things are producing in quantities enough to eat (like winter lettuce, eggs and herbs). It should pick up substantially soon.

I'm thinking of adding another bed to slap a pop-up greenhouse on in an attempt to actually succeed at growing things like peppers and basil this year. We'll see how much gumption I have. In the meantime, here's a picture of how things look in one corner of the yard.

Fruit
  • 3 x 1 Cherry tree
  • Columnar apple trees (2)
  • Peter's honey fig tree
  • Arbequina Olive tree
  • Bluecrop blueberries
  • Olympia blueberries
  • Grapes (3 types)
  • Strawberries
  • Blackberries (thornless - 4)

Vegetables
  • Yellow Finn potatoes
  • Yukon Gold potatoes
  • Asparagus
  • Yellow Rock onions
  • Romaine
  • Redleaf lettuce
  • Broccoli
  • Sugar snap peas
  • Spinach
  • Winter lettuce
  • Carrots
  • Radishes
  • Cauliflower
  • Red scallions
  • Garlic

Herbs
  • Thyme
  • Rosemary
  • Oregano
  • Italian Flatleaf Parsley
  • Cilantro
  • Dill
  • Chives
  • Sage
  • Bay
  • Apple mint
  • Lavender

Miscellaneous
  • Camellia sinensis (tea plant)
  • Morel mushrooms
  • Indoor banana (Cavendish)
  • Eggs (chicken)

Photo Notes
In the back (left to right): Oregano, rosemary, chives

In the bed (front left - old kid's sandbox): strawberries
In the bed (back right): Winter lettuce, spinach, broccoli
In the bed (hoop house): Lettuces, spinach, peas, broccoli

Love your hoop house! I need to get one of those going in my garden though I guess at this point, I'm just lucky that I've gotten anything in the ground.

I think we're slightly behind you here in the mid-Atlantic area. Right now I have lettuce, snap peas, broccoli, cabbage, and spinach as plants or seeds that are coming up which I just shared about on my blog.

I still haven't tried a hoop house in my 15 years of gardening. Maybe I'll try it at the end of the season. However, I'm going to try growing potatoes in barrels this year to save on space. I'm hoping to get a better yield, too, than I've gotten with raised beds.

We are at similar latitudes, but your weather is moderated by the sea... I'd still really like to know how you grow grapes, though.

wow, if Peak Oil does turn out to be disastrous, you'll be well prepared. Either way, you'll be well fed!

Which blackberry varieties do you suggest? I have wild ones in the forest. Can I grow figs in zone 5?

I'm curious... are you still getting any frosty mornings? I still haven't planted out or started many of the things you have on the go, but I've had three frosts and a hail storm in the last week.(And I live on the coast too) Having said that I'm still eating the tough stuff from last years garden and mesclun mix from the hoop house...and I have planted potatoes parsnips, peas, garlic, broadbeans, spinach, arugula and shallots.

WHAT is apple mint?? - sounds amazing!! I'm jealous of how green everything is in your part of the world. Here in Colorado it is still brown and dry except the lawns of a few neighbors who've been running their sprinklers already. We have some things up though too. Been meaning to take an inventory.
Love the hoop house. I've been thinking of making a bean tunnel for my kids this year. ??

I'm glad I put up the hoop house. It's supposed to be in the mid-30s at night for the rest of the week. So, at least one bed is protected. I can put floating row covers on the rest but it will have to wait until tomorrow.

Anna - Triple Crown, Apache, Black Satin are the three types of thornless blackberries I have in the backyard. Not sure about the figs.

Leta - I have yet to bear grapes, but I put them in last year so we'll see.

Anisa - Apple mint is just a variety of mint. I can't remember the description from the nursery, but the leaves are big, like peppermint.
