Blog Update!
For those of you not following me on Facebook, as of the Summer of 2019 I've moved to Central WA, to a tiny mountain town of less than 1,000 people.

I will be covering my exploits here in the Cascades, as I try to further reduce my impact on the environment. With the same attitude, just at a higher altitude!

Seattle hoop making party

I know a bunch of you are on Facebook where I've announced this a few times, but I wanted to let the rest of you know that I'll be hosting a hoop making party sometime in the next couple of weekends and wanted to find out who all is interested in joining us.

I've been going hoopdancing crazy and am enjoying the challenge and exercise that spinning a simple hoop both on and off the body can entail. Unfortunately, those cheap hoops you get from the toy store don't work well for the adult body - you really need a custom sized hoop. They are easy to make yourself, which is a good thing, since otherwise you have to order them online.

If you live in the Seattle/Puget Sound area and are interested in making your own hoop, I am hosting a hoop making party since I have all the tools and whatnot. I'll be asking for a $10 donation to cover the cost of supplies and most likely my husband will be using this opportunity to make something delectable. So far, I have about 6 people interested but if I get a bunch more reponses, I'll most likely hold a couple sessions. I'm thinking of holding the first session the weekend of the 22nd-23rd of May.

Also, if you are new to hooping and if the weather is clear, I can show you some basic techniques after we finish making them.

Anyway, let me know if you are interested by either leaving your name in the comments or sending me an email at crunchychickenblog@gmail.com.

If I was in the area I would want to join you. I participate in a hoop group in this area, but haven't made my hoop yet, I just borrow hers. ;)

Deanna, that was a great post about hooping the other day...but I couldn't find anywhere that said how to calculate the size hoop one would need? Should I make one based on where I would grasp it on the sides of my body? I'm kinda stumped.

Thanks for your help, and happy hooping!

Count me in. I could use a good hip/butt reducing excerise that is actually fun. I may bring a plus-one also.

Rob - I can make you a jumbo hula hoop - as long as you swivel them hips back and forth it will stay up.

Laura, Emily and Patsy - I'll add you to the list and will be sending out an email later this week.

Kim - A 42" diameter hoop is standard size but you can go down to 40". Basically you want a hoop that is tall enough to reach anywhere from slightly above your belly button to up to your diaphragm - the larger the hoop the easier it is to keep it up.

Hey crunchy,

I'm very tall (182cm) and always have troubles with my lower back. Thus I'm very interested in the whole hooping business, but the hoop I bought at the store doesn't do it. Well, I guess a big part of the 'not working' thing is due to needing to practice, but I actually did hula hoop as a child so I suspect that the hoop I bought now is wrong for me.

Since you're very tall too, I'd like to know how big your hoop is? How much is the diameter?

Thanks :-)
