Blog Update!
For those of you not following me on Facebook, as of the Summer of 2019 I've moved to Central WA, to a tiny mountain town of less than 1,000 people.

I will be covering my exploits here in the Cascades, as I try to further reduce my impact on the environment. With the same attitude, just at a higher altitude!

Spring has sprung - 4 weeks early

As with many areas of the country (and unlike others), Seattle had the warmest January on record and it is looking like we will have the warmest February as well. As such, all the plants and critters around here are very confused.

Last weekend people were out mowing their lawns in full force. According to the teacher of my beekeeping class that I took last night, his bees are already out and actively collecting. This is way earlier than normal.

So, for all of you still under a foot or more of snow, I took some pictures to share. Enjoy!

Cherry blossoms (ornamental):

Daffodils:

Crocus (these have been coming up for a few months now):

Pansies (these never stopped blooming since I planted them in the fall):

Other (I have no idea what this plant is, but it's blooming):

Isn't that last plant an azalea?

We've got crocus blooming and I've seen some daffodils (but mine aren't blooming yet - too shady, I think). None of the others yet - and its been below freezing the last few nights with days barely into the 40's after highs in the 60's last weekend.

OK I am very jealous. I am sitting here in New Jersey where the snow just won't stop. Your flowers are beautiful.

I'm also jealous of your beekeeping class. I can't wait until I can keep bees (I'm waiting for my youngest to get a little older and can reliably respect the bees). Please keep posting about what you learn and your progress. I'm taking notes!

In CT, it is more snow for today, although we have been lucky this year and didn't get hit as hard as the mid-atlantic.

Yes, that is an azalea in the last picture. I can't wait for spring flowers!!!

Down here in central California, I was a little worried that things may bloom late when come mid February, the camelias hadn't bloomed. The almond orchards and poppies that line the highway are all in full bloom... but it took till yesterday to see the first blush of pink camelia.

wow. gorgeous flowers all right!

We had 6° below zero last night; brilliant sun on squeaky snow today- also gorgeous, and at night the waxing moon makes it tempting to go out and walk.

Something to stick in the back of our head- really big temperature differences like this- can sometimes mean a really big storm, down the line, as the atmosphere finally equalizes things.

Enjoy it Crunch.

Here I use our abundant daffodils as a measure of spring, too- but in a little different way. Usually, it's not truly spring until it snows on the daffodils in full flower. That's usually our last bit of winter.

I'm in Texas and I'm jealous...we've had so much snow and grey weather I'm getting depressed. The last plant looks like an azalea to me.

Lucky you! In South Louisiana we are having a much longer and wetter winter than usual. We originally had mixed snow and sleet forecast for tonight. Now it is just cold rain. It would have been our fourth this winter. I can't recall four times all together since I have been living here since 1986.

I am really looking forward to our annual azelia bloom. I am guessing it will be about a month later this year. On the good side the camelias are still in full bloom - usually over in early February.

and I'm in South Texas on the Mexican border and the furnace comes on every day. Also, NO SUN. Maybe I'll winter in Seattle next year.

I just can't even imagine. I'm in the same weather situation as Greenpa. Give us another two months and we will catch up.

Your weather is alot like our in Sunny Socal. Everything is blooming! Of course I think all the poor imported plants and trees around here are always confused. They lose their leaves in December and sprout new ones in February...

I recognize the last plant as an azalea.

How wonderful!!! We haven't had as much snow round here as the rest of the state, but it has been a long, cold winter! Thank you for sharing.

They are beautiful! Flowers remind how colorful the world is and that sometimes, we should (literally) stop and smell the flowers and appreciate the beauty all around us. :) We did a post on improving indoor air quality last January and we encouraged people to decorate their homes with indoor plants. Now I think we should have said , "get more indoor flowers!"

Heading into Autumn here. My tomatoes are finally giving us some fruit and the last of the lettuces are nearly ready too.
