Blog Update!
For those of you not following me on Facebook, as of the Summer of 2019 I've moved to Central WA, to a tiny mountain town of less than 1,000 people.

I will be covering my exploits here in the Cascades, as I try to further reduce my impact on the environment. With the same attitude, just at a higher altitude!

Gaia's Garden - book giveaway

I've got my kid's cold and, as such, don't have the operating brain cells to write a coherent post. So, I decided to do a giveaway today! Today's book is Gaia's Garden: A Guide To Home-Scale Permaculture.

This book is pretty much the bible for home permaculture and this is the second edition of the book. It covers:
  • building and maintaining soil fertility and structure
  • catching and conserving water in the landscape
  • providing habitat for beneficial insects, birds, and animals
  • growing an edible "forest" that yields seasonal fruits, nuts, and other foods

This edition also features a chapter on urban permaculture, designed especially for people in cities and suburbs who have very limited growing space. Whatever size yard or garden you have to work with, you can apply basic permaculture principles to make it more diverse, more natural and more productive. Best of all, once it's established, an ecological garden will reduce or eliminate most of the backbreaking work that's needed to maintain the typical lawn and garden.

If you are interested in entering the giveaway for this book, you have until midnight Friday, February 5th, PST. Just leave your name in the comments to enter. Good luck!

Please pick me! I have limited space, and some space that is ill-suited to traditional agricultural methods.

This is perfect timing. I have this book checked out from the library right now, but I know that there is no way I can even get close to covering all it has to offer in the two weeks before it has to go back. Someone else has requested it, so who knows how long I'd have to wait to check it out again. I was sure that I'd have to find some way to squeeze it into the budget this month!

Great idea. Working in that area - trying to get a 200 tree pecan orchard declared organic - oh so much trouble, but hanging in there.

I have been trying my hand at growing a bit of useful food items on my tiny patio in the last few years. So far all I can get is herbs. Really successful with catnip for the cats and sage and rosemary. That's about it. I think I really need some help and this would definitely help me out. Thanks for the option.
