My brother, who lives in San Diego, recently sent us pictures of his backyard avocado tree I think, mostly, to taunt us. You see, he doesn't like avocados in any shape or form, but my husband, myself and my other brother, Darryl (who also lives in Seattle), love them. And the ones he grows are a thousand times better than the ones you get from the store. Better than the ones we could get even when we lived in California. Which should surprise no one. Backyard avocados are like homegrown tomatoes, there's just no comparison to store-bought ones.
So, while the avocados are in no way local to us, he sometimes ships up a box of them and I have a hard time bringing myself to discourage him of this practice, particularly since they go out to three families. Anyway, this year he has over 100 avocados on his tree. Which is why he titled his email "Avocado Pr0n". And, indeed, it is.
What's your guilty out-of-region fruit or vegetable pleasure?

Mmmm. Jealous. During every visit to California to see my inlaws, I seriously indulge on avocados. Other than that, I miss mango (dried or fresh), bananas, apples, papaya...
We're good on veggies here. We can grow about anything. The fruit hits us hard though so I splurge every once in awhile.
My guilty out of region vegetable is the avocado that I'm gonna steal from you guys when they arrive.
For me, it's the triumvirate of warm climate fruits: avocados, mangos and grapefruit. I think if I go to heaven when I die, there will be a tree of each waiting for me in the yard.
LOL bananas, pineapple are my guilty pleasures. And add avacados to the list. Can't make gaucomole with out them!
We're in MN, so most everything sweet is from out of region.
Sweet potatoes.
Oranges.
Grapefruit.
Avocados are one of my guilty out-of-region foods. Also bananas and mangos. And chocolate, I'd be willing to give up most anything but not my chocolate.
I guess it would be apples. We don't grow them here in Hawaii, but we have just about everything else. I try to abstain but I found the occasional baked apple helps with my [backwards] seasonal affective disorder.
Clementines! Just when the apples are going out of season, those beautiful little orange fruits arrive. So in the winter I love clementines and pineapple, too.

Can't these be grown indoors, like lemons? I have heard that if you plant a pit it will become a nice houseplant but not flower, so now I am wondering if it requires hand polination like the lemons? Anyone... cause this is something that isn't local that I can't give up.
Ohhh, has to be aquacates (avocados) well, and mangos, papaya...
But you know they're organic, and they are picked with love.
If a homegrown avocado is 1000 times better I hope I never touch one (or even twice as good). I would never be able to stop eating.
I don't mean to bash California avocados, but you've never seen an avocado until you've been to Florida!
My uncle had an avocado tree which would produce football sized fruit! I was amazed the first time I saw it!!! Sorry Cali ... you just can't compete. :(
I was exactly like your brother: we lived in Orange County (CA), had a huge avocado tree, and I wouldn't touch 'em to save my life. Then we moved to Seattle a year ago and I can't get enough of the darn things...
I livev in subtropical Queensland and love avocado any time. I do so love cherries amd they are a rare treat for me. Our season will start soon but no matter what I buy they will come a long way to make it to my home. In our winter I have been known to splurge on a few Washinton cherries and that is a huge sin. The air miles are outrageous and I am baffled as to how they can get them here and they are the same price as our local ones in summer.
Fruit period. Most of our fruit here is shipped in from somewhere as I live on northern prairie. In summer we do have local berries and crab apples off the trees but most of the apples come from BC.
Brown bananas! And did anyone else snicker when you said 'my other brother Darryl'? Do you remember the Bob Newhart show that had a guy who had 2 brothers named Darryl? "This is my brother Darryl, and this is my other brother Darryl." Now I'm off to look up that clip!

Apples and peaches. I live in the tropics so bananas, mangoes, and avocados (not to mention lots of other unique fruits) abound. I love mangoes though so it is a fair trade-off.
I see DramaMama also had a good laugh over "my other brother Darryl."
So, I live in San Diego and am rather impatient for the two avocados (or "abocados" as my daughter calls them) that we planted last year to produce some fruit. Yes, I know we have a few years to go. But if your brother wants to offload his avos in a more local manner, I'm here with open arms! ;-) I'm just sayin...
The "pr0n" is a few months from being plucked! My guilty pleasure sure ain't these green guys!
persimmons and mango. Too far south here to grow those or avocados which I also love.
They do at least grow in the same country just not this end :)
