The sheer amount of garbage that we as a nation generate. Books such as Garbageland and High Tech Trash were real eye-openers for me. Not only are we junking our planet, but how does this disposable society fathom it can continue to live this way in perpetuity? Wow, that's a big word for this early in the morning...
Water for sure-to drink and to raise food. The privatization of water sources is scary. That wells are being contaminated with salt water. Water is the one thing we can't live without....
My biggest concern is Peak oil. It is going to change our lives completely. I'm equally as worried by how many people think peak oil is BS, including my husband.
Local access to clean water and healthy, chemical free food are the two things I am most concerned about losing. Incidentally, efforts to protect these two items will also positvely impact other areas of environemntal concern (less CO2 produced/oil consumed by trucks/planes/boats hauling food around the planet, fewwer chemicals contaminating our water supplies, etec, etc, etc). Concerns over growing landfills of non-biodegradable waste from our rampant consumerism and love affair with plastic comes a very close second.
I don't know if I can narrow it down to one. My top few concerns are: having fresh/potable/easily accessible water, the appalling amount of garbage we are creating and various petroleum issues. As part of the garbage concern--it bothers me immensely that our garbage is killing animals, polluting resources we all need for survival and how disposable has become a "good" thing to so many people...
Water. I think one day our offspring will look back on all the stupid things we do with water (lawns and 20 minute showers come to mind) and shake their heads.App
Like Just Ducky, I'm having a hard time narrowing it down to one main concern. It just seems that we are doing all we can to poison the planet and therefore ourselves. I also worry about the social chaos when the scarcity of things we've taken for granted finally sinks in with the populace at large.
I couldn't narrow it down either but water is up there along with access to fresh water, the amount of stuff that goes out in the trash and peak oil, air qaulity is up there too-way to hard to say just one thing rates as top coincern they all rate up there.
You know, I've thought about this since it was posted yesterday. I really can't say I have ONE concern. The closest I can come is so broad you'd probably say it's cheating: too many humans on this planet using too many resources leaving behind too much unnatural (new chemical compositions, etc.) waste. Rather pessimistic of me, huh?
I don't want to narrow it down to one, because if I start thinking specifics, anxiety kicks in. The one thought that creeps in the most is along the lines of what Theresa said about social chaos. I worry about my friends and family that are not prepared for the changes to come.
My greatest worry is that our motivations to do things will be based on fear of what could happen if we don't do them, rather than being based on joy for what could happen if we do; I do not see that action motivated from fear is any more sustainable than the human activity that necessitates action. Hope that makes sense. Bryan
Clean water is what I'm most afraid of loosing but my biggest concern is the reaction (from both government and the general public) to some of the possible precipitous changes in the environment or availability of resources. Change over a period of time is one thing (a good thing!) but drastic change when there are few alternatives is quite another. Here's to planning ahead!
My biggest concern is that we will not have enough fresh water for everyone. That scares me.
ReplyDeletePeak oil is my biggest concern.

Right now I have to say weaning off the dependency of oil and the problems it brings.
