I still have the kale trees going strong (complete with white fly infestation), my cabbage plants are just now coming on strong and same thing with the broccoli. My tomato plants are totally loving this heat and are producing some fantastic late season crops, the likes I've never seen before.
What will I be planting in addition to all this stuff still growing (not including, of course, all the herbs that are still doing their thang)? Well, I'm going to plant frost hardy spinach and lettuces as well as radishes, more kale and possibly some things to overwinter. I'll also be getting on the ball this year and planting garlic sooner rather than later. The panic planting I did last January resulted in some rather puny looking garlic heads. Lesson learned.
Are you growing a fall vegetable garden? If so, what do you have going on?
Frost hearty spinach? This is a wonderful thing I have not heard of. Is this a particular variety? Are you plating plants or seeds?
ReplyDeleteWe put in some cabbage, kale, micro greens, and more carrots and broccoli. We might be a bit unrealistic about the weather, we'll see. We're planning on doing garlic and shallots once the local nursery gets them in.
Yesterday I planted spinach, chard, lettuce, and winter onions and then we got 5 inches of rain in 4 hours. Oh well.

I'd be interested in knowing what exactly variety of frost hearty spinach you will be using too. I'd like to plant that and a few collards.

ReplyDeleteI have spinach, 3 kinds of kale, brussel sprouts, collard greens lettuce, broccoli and some peas that reseeded when I side dressed some rows with the pea plants that I pulled when it got hot. I doubt we'll have peas but the leaves and stems taste just like peas.

I'm working on some cold frames to supplement my greenhouse ('cause I'm not good enough to grow beets, carrots, and parsnips in a greenhouse!), which hopefully will keep my tomatoes going as long as possible, along with some spinach, lettuce, onions, herbs, and whatever else I feel like trying not to kill!

well this year I plan on Kale, Lettuce, Mesclun, Kohlrabi, and radishes. I also have squashes still growing- and my fennel is making a comeback after harvesting!

ReplyDeleteMy tomatoes are okay, even though I'm pretty sure they don't have much time left. Lettuce is also going strong. We need to get our act together this weekend for a fall crop, cleaning out the old and making room for some seeds.
spinach and lettuce...the chard will keep going to frost. my garden was a disaster this year...too much rain, not enough sun and the weeds were vicious.

ReplyDeleteAnd there are no such thing as kale trees. Just kale plants that are huge and taking over my vegetable bed.
