I know we've been discussing a lot lately about eating locally and little of seasonal eating from our reading of The Omnivore's Dilemma. It's been a bit of a cheat having Local Food Month during July when, for many places, that's when the selection and bounty of fruits and vegetables are available.
But I wanted to discuss a little more about eating seasonally (an extension of eating locally, really) and find out what your favorite eating season is.
Don't forget that The Perfect Meal is coming up soon!
There isn't a category for me in the poll: each season as it arrives. I always have a hard time picking a favorite anything because, at that moment, I would generally say that the current food is my favorite. So right now, I'd pick summer foods. But, in a few months, I'd definitely tell you the fall harvest is my favorite. Fresh food in season is the best!
ReplyDeleteI love fall. The apples and pumpkins are ripe and the weather is cool enough to enjoy spending time outside picking them.
ReplyDeleteI agree with chile -- I am definitely in favor of the food of the moment! I was so excited about the idea of gathering yeast in 'omnivore' that it felt like a religious experience -- how eden-esque, food wafting to us on the air currents! Of course, I am lucky if I make it to my local farmers' market and do a simple stir fry of whatever they have available, but I really admire slow food people!
ReplyDeleteno love for spring? the first asparagus after a long winter of butternut squash and coldframe kale?
ReplyDeleteI'm with chile, too. I enjoy eating all the time, especially when I know where the food came from and I cook it myself. Raw, fresh veggies in summer can be as nice as warm squash in January.
