Blog Update!
For those of you not following me on Facebook, as of the Summer of 2019 I've moved to Central WA, to a tiny mountain town of less than 1,000 people.

I will be covering my exploits here in the Cascades, as I try to further reduce my impact on the environment. With the same attitude, just at a higher altitude!

Intelligent Life article

No Impact Man, Green as a Thistle, Casaubon's Book, Little Blog in the Big Woods and Crunchy Chicken were all mentioned in an article in Intelligent Life, a quarterly magazine put out by The Economist.

Here's a snippet:

In Seattle Crunchy Chicken, a mother of two, trying to reduce her family's energy consumption, runs a green book club, a low-impact week, a local-food month and a discussion on reusable menstrual cups (complete with photo). As she cheerfully puts it: "Waaaay more information than you probably wanted."

Too bad they missed out on the new challenge!

The article is about (and is titled) "blogging the good life." For those of you interested, their online magazine has an excerpt of the article online.

It WAS a nice article, but I have a few questions, Crunchy.

Colin got the reluctant acceptance of his efforts from his mate, but you indicated recently that you were the only one in your household doing the cloth wipe thing. Is this to say that you're not inclined to approach your mate, or your children with some of the things you encourage US to do?

Do you shave at all? I ask because I shaved my legs and underarms tonight using a different method to save more water. Took 1.25 cups of water for each leg (if anyone's interested) :-). Underarms took just a few flicks in the shower.

My girls shave a whole lot more frequently than I do due to a number of reasons including how old women just aren't as hairy due to not having the "turnaround" on growth. Then there's the whole thing about how they CARE about how they look more than I care about how *I* look and blah blah.

I usually shaved my legs (about once/month in the summer season...I don't bother at all in the winter when I wear long pants every day) sitting on the side of the tub with a slight drizzle coming off the faucet to rinse the razor. Today I chose to try the different method just because my consciousness has been raised. Isn't that what this is SUPPOSED to be all about?

When I'd finished dumping the second little bowl of hairy disgusting water into the toilet I thought, "Why hasn't Crunchy ever mentioned shaving?"

Well? Did I miss it? There's a whole "disposable" vs. non inherent there, as well.

oldnovice - yes, Colin got the acceptance of his efforts from his mate, but I'd like to point out that his "experiment" is part of a documentary (filming himself and his family) as well as his book deal. I'm just trying to do as best I personally can and involving my family as much as I am able to get away with.

Regarding the cloth wipe usage, so far I've been the only one in the household using cloth wipes as the prelude to this challenge. As for the kids, they are barely capable of successfully wiping themselves half the time (they are both under 5ish). I really don't want to spend my time fishing wipes out of the toilet and/or calling in a plumber. When they are more ready for it, I'll integrate them into it. They certainly are very interested and are happy to announce to people that "Mommy uses cloth!" Sometimes to my chagrin.

As for my husband, he will be using cloth during the challenge as a compromise for something else :) He has been willing to do every hair-brained idea up 'til now. Unfortunately, using the push mower has sent him into months of back pain and issues with walking. So, that one has been my biggest regret so far with these experiments.

I'm hoping to have my husband write a guest post one of these days. He just needs more encouragement.

I'll address the shaving topic in another post as it's something I haven't yet covered, so thanks for the reminder!
