The first one was when my husband and I were performing all summer on weekends in a show. We had vacation days we needed to use from The Real Job and lot of "if we weren't doing the show, we'd check that out" in our city. So we took a week off from work and checked out all of the stuff on our list like a day in our arts district, museums, a killer farmers' market etc. Another year we went to the State Fair. One year we holed up for a long weekend in Amish country. Another year we checked out the kitschy stuff that was listed for our state on RoadsideAmerica.com. Many are treating staycation like some sort of sad sacrifice but it doen't have to be. When I was young my mom and dad would take a vacation to north dakota , then the next year we hung around local, visiting the ocean, going to our lake property in shelton, exploring local towns and sites.
