Blog Update!
For those of you not following me on Facebook, as of the Summer of 2019 I've moved to Central WA, to a tiny mountain town of less than 1,000 people.

I will be covering my exploits here in the Cascades, as I try to further reduce my impact on the environment. With the same attitude, just at a higher altitude!

Urban chicken video action

If you are, like me, hanging around on Veteran's Day and looking for a little diversion, you can check out the 10 minutes or so of video I made this week explaining our chicken coop setup, the run and the stars of the episode themselves, the chickens!

Enjoy!

If you are having problems viewing this you can go directly to my channel on the YouTubes.

With all due respect, if you are "looking for diversion" on Remembrance Day/Veteran's Day, you might just want to check out your local ceremonies to mark the day, visit veterans in the local hospital or centre, or even head off to your local soup kitchen to donate time or materials. It's a holiday for a reason.

It's an echo! I'm hearing the noises from your chickens and exactly the same noises from my chickens coming in through the open window. Maybe if I brought the laptop outside my chickens would try to talk to yours

I love love love your chicken coop setup. I'll have to live vicariously through you, though as my HOA won't be allowing me to have anything more than a dog. ;(

Very cool! I made some brownies today with some eggs from my mom's chickens. So nice to know where my eggs come from, I wasn't worried when there was the egg recall. :)

BTW do more videos! I love seeing people's homes and such, I'm nosey haha.

I sure hope you are reconciled to letting the chickens weather whatever weather should happen. I know some people worry when the temperature isn't as warm as the house (their house). Dad raised chickens in NW Iowa, with temps down to -20 and -30 F - and no heat. There were a couple hundred birds on the roost, though, and they did OK.

A few years back I had a bunch of chickens - I kept incubating all them Bantam eggs, and had decent results raising and re-incorporating the chicks, and sold about 60 out of my 8x8 chicken house and enclosed run.

The six I have now - a Bantam hen, three Bantam roosters, and two "layer" mix hens - share the roost, sort of. The white silky rooster isn't allowed to mingle much, and doesn't get to share the roost.

I have a waterer heater, plugged into an outlet fixture from Lowes, that turns the cord on below 45 degrees. I leave the tilt-in windows tilted in, and the vent (two horizontal slits with plexiglass louvers, 30 inches by 6) cracked open. It has worked for nine years, now, with no losses from the cold, down to -10 most years and -20 at times.

My coop is tin, with insulation under the roof and 1/4 inch plywood lining the walls above the raised plywood floor.

With adequate ventilation I don't get much poop smell, even when fairly crowded.

And I still don't know where the odd possum gets in. Usually only once, once I spot them.
