Blog Update!
For those of you not following me on Facebook, as of the Summer of 2019 I've moved to Central WA, to a tiny mountain town of less than 1,000 people.

I will be covering my exploits here in the Cascades, as I try to further reduce my impact on the environment. With the same attitude, just at a higher altitude!

Sustainable dress chosen!

Thanks to everyone who voted on yesterday's poll for which dress I should wear to the Seattle Premiere of my green makeover show, Mission: Sustainable. I also want to thank the readers who suggested some alternatives that were sustainable. That helped me decide to go with something that wasn't an off-the-rack dress.

And, instead of choosing a rental, a used dress or something that wasn't obvious that it was sustainable, I ended up choosing a ballgown style dress that is made of recycled neckties. I did this as it would be clear that the dress is made of repurposed materials.

In addition, the designer of the dress is local (from WA state) and will be doing some alterations to my measurements. How much more sustainable is that? Not only is the dress made of recycled materials, but it's local!

I couldn't ask for a better combination to help support the underlying goals of Mission: Sustainable. I wouldn't feel as confident wearing a commercially made, unsustainable dress and, I'm sure, the dress will be quite the conversation piece!

The pictures on this post are photos of the actual dress I will be getting. The model is my height and about my measurements, so there will be only a few alterations to get it to fit perfectly. So, what you see is what you'll get!

Anyway, if you are interested in learning more about the designer of the dress you can check out her site, Glamarita, and her Etsy shop!

See you on the green carpet!

I tend to dislike skirts made out of ties, but this actually is quite lovely! It looks so glamorous. Great find!

Yay! Though, I had to go back and take a second look when you said it was made from ties. Somehow, I did not catch that when I saw the image of the dress. Very lovely choice :)

OMG, that is absolutely BEAUTIFUL.

Teh Gay approves.

Screw sustainable, that is just damn sexy.

Not to detract from your most amazing gown, but it reminds me of a quilt I had once (was ruined in a house fire, sadly). My grandmother had made the grandkids quilts from pieces of our grandfather's ties. It was such an amazing gift.

Anyway, great choice. Gonna look great.

Awesome! It will look fantastic...

I made a halterneck tie dress for a competition way back in high school from old ties, and a friend made a skirt and top from them (for the 'recycled' section of the competition... no, we didn't win, nor did the 'button dress'... the girl in the garbage bag outfit won!!??!! Rigged, I tells ya!). Years later when I wanted to do the same again, you just couldn't get good groovy 60's & 70's ties from op shops anymore!

How about your accessories and hairstyle? Recycled silvery long, not too delicate, earrings and matching bracelet? Maybe a small, matching solid colour clutch, decorated with recycled cufflinks? & I think your classic straight do would be good, but maybe a low, loose chignon would work for something different and glamorous?

I love that! I'm missing getting dressed up, it's been a while!

I love that you're the same height and measurements as the model. You mean real people who have jobs and families and responsibilities look like that too? :)

Gives me hope that I may actually get my body back someday, haha!

It looks fine.

But I glanced at the picture - and thought about how many rag-rugs that would make. I know, some of us would complain if you hung us with a new rope.

wow. It's gorgeous! good job. The camera should love it too- though camerapeople don't usually like "busy"; I'd bet this will work fine; very eyecatching, and the concept is great.

Beautiful, upcycled, eyecatching. Great choice, Crunch! :) I hope I get to go to the event and see you and the dress in person. :)!

I have been wanting to make a skirt out of ties, now I am thinking I should head to the thrift store and gets lots of ties to make skirts and dresses and even a cape for DD's halloween costume...
I love reuse.
