Goods 4 Girls: an update

I've been getting a number of emails from people recently asking about the Goods 4 Girls project so I thought I'd give you all an update. Since I stopped accepting donations in January, I've been mostly dealing with the tax burden of running the operation and trying to continue with the distribution of the pads that I still have on hand.

This last month I sent over a number of kits to an orphanage in Mozambique and hope to go through the remaining boxes of pads and get them set up for distribution. At that point I'll reconnect with some of the distribution groups that I was working with in the past.

On one hand, I feel bad about letting this project go, but I know I just don't have time to do this effectively. There have been many individuals interested in taking it over, but it really needs to be set up as a non-profit business to be run properly and that takes a lot of work. I'm more than happy to transfer over my contacts to someone else who is willing to continue with it under their own business name.

Anyway, as I finish distributing the rest of the pads, I'll let you know about it. Also, when I get more information about how the distribution in Mozambique went, I'll fill you in on that as well.

Thanks for all you've done with Goods 4 Girls. I've been reading The Big Necessity, by Rose George, about sanitation around the world, and when I got to the chapter on the bathrooms (or lack thereof) in schools in the "underdeveloped" countries, it made me appreciate your efforts a lot more.

I just wanted to write and thank you for starting the Goods 4 Girls project.

It has been a blessing to those young women--but also to me to see an individual decide that they can do something to help others---and then do it.

Many blessings to you, Crunchy Chicken.

Yep. Having personally launched a conservation organization (which just celebrated its 25th anniversary; and incorporated another I was briefly CEO of, I can testify that this is true.

However- I, myself DID NOT DO THAT WORK.

heh heh. The standard tactic is to survey your members, and find someone who is, or knows, a lawyer willing to do the incorporation pro bono.

Lawyers get good brownie points for incorporating non-profits for free, and for them, it's not nearly as much work as it is for a layperson. Lots of boilerplate than can adapt.

And right now there are a bunch of lawyers with some time on their hands. Shouldn't be that difficult. You might even go to your local Legal Aid office, and ask them.

It's DOABLE- and worth doing.

Crunch; as you know- I admire your efforts on Goods for Girls enormously. And that may be an understatement.

Also something that might be good to know- both of the organizations I incorporated now thrive- without me. I'm on to other things; and they're doing the work, year after year; and glad about it.

Great site! For the last year Days For Girls volunteers have been creating distributing kits. When we started we found you, but just missed being able to connect. What a difference the kits make! I would love to discuss sharing contacts, as well as to glean from your experience. We can be emailed at daysforgirls@gmail.com. Thank you for all you have done! I look forward to hearing from you.
