It's been rather balmy up here with all the rain, so we haven't really needed the heat, especially with the oven going.
Tonight we are wrapping up Pioneer Week with a grand meal and inviting family over. We are roasting a local, organic, fresh chicken and serving it with smashed potatoes and steamed green beans (both local, of course). For dessert, my husband made a Chocolate Guinness Cake (thanks Nigella!) using some Guinness and cocoa powder we had on hand.
Finally, I've been reading a bunch of books on saving money and frugality, so when I get around to it, I'll post some of the things I've learned and already started to implement to help save us money.
I hope that your Pioneer Week went well, even if you were just following along in spirit!

That sounds nice and cozy. What do you do with the cedar branches?
We didn't sign up for Pioneer Week but we've been trying to cook more from scratch and keep the TV off this last week. We did really well, except for election night!
Well, I'm sorry to say that I didn't do a bang job on the Pioneer week. I LOVED the idea but ended up having some stuff disrupt my plans. We did eat basically every breakfast, lunch and most dinners from 100% made from scratch. I did read Little House on the Prairie to my kids too and tried to convince them to make a button string with buttons from pants and such that I've been saving. It just didn't happen but at least we did discuss what life for pioneer children was like. Great idea, Crunchy.
I have already confessed my sins about this. But it all sounds so cosy and nice. Candldes are just so warming in our summer heat though.
Not so “pioneery” to end the week- Went to work on Saturday and bought Chinese food, And forgot about being a pioneer friday night and got busy watching TV (You know I love The Nanny!) Fell asleep on the couch woke up burning to death- here was Topaz (aka “Stu”) the 75 pound Chocolate Lab sleeping on my legs. And Sammy Cat sleeping on my chest! Nothing like a big old stupid dog and a wily little kitty to warm you up! Certainly makes me appreciate the concept of a three dog night! But I suppose I did okay- homemade soup every night, read 3 books,
We had a DR.s visit and then electon day...but we did keep the TV off til later to get results. Wasn't a complete failure since we made all our meals from scratch. We kept the TV off except for a few hours on Tuesday. We baked alot..talked alot and generally just tried to keep busy...we made meals from scratch, mended some quilts, read, homework was done early or at school. Played alot of games in the evenings by candlelight and did some reading.
I missed having the radio on (NPR). But was glad that the youngin had played her violin...plan on leaving the TV off more now. Can't find anything to watch 95% of the time anyway.
Had a few 2 dog nights here but nothing so bad we felt like we needed to put the heat on. I figure it was a sucess..
I was so intent on doing the Pioneer Week, but then things got away from me. I followed it in spirit I guess. At least I still haven't turned the heat on! And I cooked local meals at home that week. But then it's just stuff that I do most of the time anyway, so it didn't feel special. There is always next time though, right? ;-)
while i didn't participate, i love the idea. thanks for mentioning the little house picture books. i've been wanting to get the first LH book for my 4 yr old, but think maybe a few picture books would be a better way to start before we delve into that. :)
Okay- I failed as a pioneer. My husband got a new job so I had to drive 8 hours with my kids to find us a place to live. That killed alot of the week and then packing made me turn to the convenience of take out. So next pioneer week I will have to make up for it.
Hi! I really enjoy your blog!
I was wondering if there was any chance that you could put up at booklist or something like that, of what you have read about frugal living and saving money? I'm really interested in these topics and always need new tips on what to read:)
Best wishes,
Kristin from Norway
