100% electricity plan

I was planning on writing a post for today on Al Gore's 100% Electricity Spiel and what's all wrong with it. In fact, I was excited all day yesterday about getting the time to write it. Well, as excited as one can get watching 4 hours of blood transfusions.

Anyway, we ended up admitting my husband to the hospital last night and I spent my time there instead of writing up my energy analysis. So, y'all will just have to wait on that one...

In the meantime, talk amongst yourselves.

"Talk amongst yourselves"
Since I am the only one here, does that mean I am talking to myself?

Hope things are OK now. (Or as OK as they can get.)

My husband (28 years old) has cancer, too. I'm really sorry about all the time in the hospital. It totally sucks, but hopefully it's making him better. Thanks for all your green thoughts. =) Hang in there.

Mr. Crunchy,
Keep up the good thoughts, I am sending you more.

Has anyone started planning what to plant for end of summer/fall? My peas and corn are done. I am pulling out the rest of the potatoes this weekend ... now what?

Gore's proposal may not be perfect, but its the best I've heard from any one of "national leader" status. I'm eager for your analysis.

Blessed be.

As always, my prayers and best wishes to you and your family Crunchy.

Since we're supposed to be talking amongst ourselves: Jenette or anyone else growing potatoes - this is my first year. I live in Western Massachusetts (Zone 4). How do I know when potatoes are ready to be "pulled"?

Thanks - Debbie C

Crunchy -

My heart goes out to you and yours. Prayers and good wishes!

Debbie C -

I'm growing potatoes for the first time this year myself but I've read somewhere that when the potato plant (the above ground parts) dies off, then you can harvest. Although you can probably harvest small, baby potatoes earlier than that if you want.

Take good care of your Mr. Crunch and yourself too. Hope you get home soon.

Get better soon Mr.Crunchy. You are allowing Al Gore to escape a Crunchy scathing and we can't have that.
I anticipate a skillful scathing of the Earth Tone Guy, Crunchy, and am willing to wait. It's always worth it at this blog.

Re: potatoes

They are ready when the above ground parts are good and dead- wait another week or two after that if possible, then dig away.
Don't feel bad about not knowing this btw- I just had a visit from an old friend from high school who lives a very urban/usburban lifestyle and is a highly paid computer sort- she was touring the market garden here and wanted to see the potatoes. I showed her the planting(lots)- she gazed at it for awhile and then asked where the potatoes were though as she didn't see any! Yes, she didn't realize that potatoes grow under the ground.......

As to what else to plant now, that depends on your location. Here in the far north one can still plant green beans, kale, spinach, chard, beets, lettuce, radishes,(cukes, summer squash-plant on protecting those from frost);all of those should still give you a crop and make good succession plantings replacing the others which give up the gasp. Some people have good luck with fall peas too; I don't for some reason so I don't plant those except in the spring but you can try some.

Ani ... thanks for the planting recommendations. We live in ZONE 14. Inland Northern and Central California with Some Ocean Influence
Growing season: early Mar to mid-Nov.

This is our first year with potatoes as well ... only 3 of the 9 we planted sprouted ... so far 2 'sprouts' have wilted and have been dug up.

Prayers for you both. This really, really sucks, I'm sure.
