Off the air

So long, fair readersSo long, farewell, auf wiedersehen, adieu.

I'm not sure for how long, but I'm going to take a break from blogging for a while. It could be for just a few weeks or it could be longer.

Why you ask? Partly because I'm burned out from personal stress. Trying to keep up with a full-time job, two kids (one with "special needs") and a husband fighting cancer is taking its toll. Add to that trying to keep the household running, manhandling a huge yard single-handedly and various other things and I'm too pooped. Oh yeah, throw in Goods 4 Girls for good measure.

Not to mention the fact that my husband's stem cell transplant was cancelled. We've been joking that he got "kicked off the transplant team", but it really isn't funny. They couldn't get a clean stem cell collection even after nuclear blasts of chemo, so we're trying a different route. It's not hopeless yet, but it's not exactly encouraging.

At the same time, I decided a couple of weeks ago to take more time for myself, make sure I get enough sleep and have time to exercise. Well, the blogging has been seriously intruding on my ability to do both. As a result, I fear I'm becoming cantankerous and a little too dissatisfied with everything. I don't want to go that route. I've lost my will to blog.

I see that there are plenty of other blogs that are just as easily going to make up for my lack of blogging. Everyone and their grandmother has challenges, giveaways and other goofiness going on. Mostly, I don't feel like I have anything particularly useful or insightful to add to the conversation anymore. So, suffice it to say that I'm sure I won't be missed much as there's plenty of inspiration out there.

That's not to say that I won't occasionally post something or add a comment here and there. What will I be doing with all my copious spare time? Reading, planting, canning and planning my next blog world takeover. You ain't seen the last of me yet.

Carry on!

Update: Errr. Never mind. I'm back.

I'm mostly a lurker, but I wanted to chip in here. I'll definitely miss your contributions, small though you may think they are. It sounds like a good decision that you've made, but I look forward to your return, when and if that becomes possible.

Warm regards,

Heather from New Zealand.

Crunchy, you will be missed. At the same time, good on you for making the time for you. For me, full-time work and part-time school are enough...I don't know how you do it, you're a legend!!! I've been living in Australia since 1997, but was born & raised in Washington State myself. You do us all proud!!! I'll be keeping an eye on your blog, and awaiting your return. All the best to you, Mr Crunchy and the kids.

Best wishes,

Dear Crunchy,

I found your blog a few months ago, and have loved reading it. You have a wonderful writing style, and a wealth of ideas that are, quite frankly, inspiring. You've helped me make a lot of changes (goodbye to disposable feminine products, hello local food, etc). Thank you.

Best wishes for a return to health, and for love and laughter to you, Mr. Crunchy and your kids.

Oh Man! Crunchy dear - I totally understand your need to go - but if we cling to your ankles and try to stop you from walking out the cyberdoor - understand we don't want you to go!

You have had a good running blog here and its totally opened my eyes to the little things my kids and I can do to help the earth a little more - without going totally off grid and weaving the clothes we wear...

If you ever get to the head shaving day - please come back and post that! Its a fantastic goal!

Best of luck to you and your husband and kids! Something good your way comes!

You absolutely will be missed--but we still all support you in your decision to take a break. As Heather says, it sounds like a good decision to give yourself some time to deal with all the difficulties you have right now.

You're right about one thing, Crunchy: there are a lot of great blogs now doing the same kinds of things you have done. What you did not mention is that it is really because of the amazing model you suggested.

You have changed my life--which sounds ridiculous, perhaps, but it is true. Peace.

So thumbs up to a great blog that inspired not only my family but many others! Take care of Mr. Crunchy and crunchy kids..and yourself!

"I see that there are plenty of other blogs that are just as easily going to make up for my lack of blogging"

Nope. You're unique, and a delight. And you know how cranky I am about the truth- that's true.

All of your other reasons for taking a break are totally valid, and overdue, really, you wacko.

But THAT one is a crock. :-)

Here's my bet- you'll take about 5 weeks of good R&R (wild maniacal laughter) - then something out here in the world will tick you off enough that you'll start posting again, occasionally.

Betcha. And that'll be fine. Just don't go away forever.

Take care.

Good for you, Crunchy. I'm sure you need to take the non-essentials off your 'to-do' list right now. Yours is the first blog I check each morning, and you will be missed! But please, dear, take care of yourself and that lovely family of yours. They need you happy and healthy.

hey crunchy. good for you for making this decision. of course, like everyone else, i'll miss checking up on your blog every morning. but, this sounds like it's best for you and your family. it's funny timing that this post came today - last night i had a talk with my dad about how after my mom's diagnosis, we've somehow expected to do the same things we did before (ie. being able to work as much, excercising, being able to attend to things as small as email, etc...) but we've come to realize that we have to adjust our expectations of ourselves; what could be done in a day last year will take more like 3 now. i hope this gives you a bit more time to have a few moments to yourself and recharge every once in a while. i've been thinking about you and your family more as my mom has begun the process for stem cell last week. i'm sorry to hear that it wasn't a possible treatment :( i look forward to seeing your return, when things improve for mr. crunchy/your family.

best thoughts/wishes for all of you

Just want to add: you make the very serious eco-challenges fun.
That's a huge contribution right there! "Freezing yer buns" is a lot easier to do than sitting miserably in a cold house. And, it was easier to do it knowing so many others joined your challenge and were doing it along with us.

Thanks for all the humor you have added to our lives! Can't wait till you come back...

They say absence makes the heart grow fonder?!? Best wishes to you, Mr. Crunchy and your children. You will be missed, but when you return, we will be that much happier see you! Be well, take care and enjoy your time to rest and replenish!

Sandy said...

Crunch!

I want to say first of course absolutely you do what you need to do and you take the time for yourself and your family comes first and you should pamper and treat and rest yourself because you so deserve it! As if you need our permission!!!???!!! How you've managed all this thus far is an inspiration to me personally! Several years ago during my divorce I went into the fetal position for about a year and I could have cared less if the entire world went up in flames. That you've still cared about anyone but yourself and your family during this time is utterly amazing to me and quite the indicator of your great character and strength.

All the same, I am so going to miss your daily inspiration. I'm slightly cranky thinking about it! Your blog is the first place I go every day, and I've learned not to drink coffee while I read, especially if DC, Chile and Greenpa are chiming in.

And no, there are no blogs like yours. Similarities, yes, but none like yours. That's why we all found you and come back every single day. We worry, we pray, and we wonder where you are when you aren't there.

I, for one, don't expect a long lapse because I figure something is going to piss you off big time and off to the keyboard you will go!

So to me, this is a pause, not an ending. Go get yourself some Beverly Nichols books (Merry Hall) and sit back with a cup of tea and bliss out for a while while you hug your family close.

Best Wishes to you....

But when time has passed and the circumstances are improved, especially for Mr. Crunchy, and you just have to get on your recycled soapbox again, I am ready to hear the new improved Crunchy messages.

You are willing to talk about all that 'dirty' stuff like family cloth and what you do with your period. Sounds weird to me but I cried when you started Good for Girls. It must be the baby hormones. Which made me get the cotton t-shirt out of my desk and blow (thats due to you too!)
Good health to the crunchy family.

Like everyone I am going to miss you. You have been and continue to be an inspiration for me. While there are other blogs and bloggers, there is only one Crunchy Chicken. Take care of yourself and your family. All of you are in my thoughts.

I'm happy for you, and I support your decision. However, I have to vastly disagree with your comment that you are not needed. You offer an important view point and yours is one of the limited blogs I check daily. You will be sorely missed!! Be well.

Good call for you, Crunchy, but I'll miss you. It's hard to overstate the impact you've had on my life and the lives of my circle of friends. We're Diva-wearing, cloth-wipe using, thermostat-off people now, and it's all because of this blog.

I will keep you, your husband and children in my thoughts.

So long, farewell, take good care of yourself and your dear crunchy family.

Many many of us will have to find a new blog to check first thing in the morning -- you are unique and special, and you will be truly missed.

many blessings.

I'll definitely miss your posts, but you clearly need/deserve some time to focus on other things.

Here's wishing you the best during your hiatus!

There's lots of quantity, but quality is a different matter altogether.

Everyone (who is not a complete idiot) will understand your need to put real life first and take a break. But don't think you won't be missed.

Thank you so much for opening my eyes to all the little ways my family and I can change things. You have impacted my life and now I look at things very differently ~ and for that, thank you.

Now, if I could only get the hang of this Diva...

I'm thinking of you and your family daily...

Oh crap! This is all my fault! For a couple of weeks now I've been meaning to email you and let you know I'm thinking of you and see how you're doing. But I was too lame and preoccupied with other things.

I love you and your blog! And I also TOTALLY understand being overtired and stressed and losing the will to continue blogging. I am on a day-by-day basis with my own blog, asking myself each night, "Do I really want to do it again?"

So here I am making this comment all about me. Well, bloggers are kinda self-involved, right?

I'm glad you are taking a break, for your own sanity and peace of mind. You have set an awesome, really magnificent example for the rest of us. You will be terribly missed, and welcomed back with open... um... laptops whenever you decide to rejoin Blogland.

Also, I just want to say how much I appreciate your signing off publicly rather than simply disappearing from the Blogosphere as some others have done. It shows that you care about and value your readers. It should be required Blogger etiquette.

I wish all good things for you and your family and hope to see you lurking around Fake Plastic Fish in your spare time.

Love and bloggy kisses,
Beth

In spite of my total disappointment (and my disappointment is everything, damn it), I understand and salute you for making the right choice.

Be well.

Take care.

Pop in and say hi every so often.

You just said no one would miss you to fish for comments. BRILLIANT!
I'll miss your insight because I think you have a lot more to offer this word.
Either way, Blessings to you & your family!

I agree with what greepa said.

Unoriginal comment, but yeh... he's spot on the money there.

We'll all get along without you, of course (well, we'll have to, won't we! :).. but be warm & happy in the knowledge that you've changed so many people's lives & thoughts & ways of being for the better.

You rock.

having just found your blog i'm a little disappointed to find you're leaving. putting yourself and family first, isn't that what we as moms and wives and women are always encouraging others to do? congratulations on having the inner strength to practice what so many of so only preach. your blog helped open the door to a whole new world for me, and through me, my children (they've even agreed to take up some of your challenges). from so far away you've made a difference in the lives of so many others. may you find peace and rest, renewed hope and healing in your time.

Well it's not at all true that you won't be missed. Taking the time to take care of you and yours is a good thing though imho- a very important thing to do.

I've appreciated your blog and I wish you all the best.

((((Crunchy)))) So, i got my Diva Cup in the mail today and stopped by to tell you how excited I am. I was saddened to see you go but as has been echoed here - we all understand and wish you and your family the best. There are none like you and you will be sorely missed. Not that I'm hoping for something to piss you off....but I'm looking forward to your next post already! Best to you and your family.

Sending thoughts your way. Thanks for getting me motivated to plant more veges, puree avocado and pumpkin (1 avo and 2 pumkpin left in freeze). My water is down and you have helped me on my way. Take time for yourself and I will be holding down my fort making butter and gardening like crazy. It is hard enough for me to follow the blogs with my kids and job so I imagine being in charge take lots of time.

I'm mostly a lurker but always a reader. Your wit and wisdom will be missed. I hope Mr Crunchy's new treatment plan is successful.

You are a niche of your own so of course I will notice your absence, but I am glad you are taking care of yourself. You have such a lot on your plate, it is amazing that you have juggled all that and the blogging, too, for so long. I'm sending positive thoughts and wishes your way.

I wish we had a poll! With categories for the number/type of changes Crunchy has inspired us to make, if she inspired you start a blog, and some other pithy choice.

But, alas, the Poll Queen is on a break.

Anonymous said...

My best wishes to you and your family.

RC said...

OK. I never answered the polls. I never did the challenges as a lot of them I had done years ago, I don't have the TV, we don't heat, we sun dry, and all that crap.
My confession: I read the blog for the jokes. Now I am in withdrawal.
All the same I can go back and check the archives.
We're thinking of you Crunchy. Keep your chin up, unless you are planting.

Crunchy! I'm going to miss you so much! You probably can't tell since I don't comment that much, but I read your blog almost every day. This is weird to say, but from all of your awesome antics and funny tales, I feel somehow like you're a dear friend, even if it is sort of a strange one-sided friendship where I know tons about you and we never talk :) Anyways, I think others would agree that somehow you've become our friend.

That said, I just want to say good luck with everything and enjoy you're break. It's much deserved after all of your hard work :)

I've been a lurker for a few months but wanted to drop a line to lend my support. Your blog was the first find for me in my online echo-search. You've truly inspired me and in turn, my family and friends, to live greener lives. I am a Diva cow, and have converted 5 friends to date. But that's just the start of this snowball. There are so many other things that our family/workplace and schools do now because of your lead. Really, you can give yourself a pat--you've been the catalyst for change for hundreds of people. Hundreds!! I understand the much needed break for you, but know that you will be kept in our thoughts and missed until your return. Love to your family from the center of BC,
Brooke.

Crunchy,

Don't throw the baby out with the bathwater. As I scrolled down, down, down the page to post this comment, my belief that you've made a positive difference in so many lives across the globe was firmly rooted. I am sending you a virtual pat on the back and a hug for you simply being you. There may be hundreds of other blogs, giveaways, contests, etc., but there simply is no other Crunchy Chicken in town! You are a gem!
