Blog Update!
For those of you not following me on Facebook, as of the Summer of 2019 I've moved to Central WA, to a tiny mountain town of less than 1,000 people.

I will be covering my exploits here in the Cascades, as I try to further reduce my impact on the environment. With the same attitude, just at a higher altitude!

Potatoes part deux

Tater bucketsWell, my Yukon Golds are already sprouting up. I'll have to keep an eye on them taters.

I decided to go ahead and plant the French Fingerlings in another plastic container (hey, they were on sale!). So, now we have both side by side. They aren't the most attractive garden containers, but as long as they get the job done, I don't care!

Yukon Golds are my favorite potatoes. The year I planted them I didn't plant enough! We ate them all in a matter of about two weeks. :)

Did you put holes in the bottom of the containers? I need to get my potatoes planted in the next few days and I've been debating what container to do them in. I have some large pots but I don't think they are large enough.

qt - yeah, I love Yukon Golds. They are so creamy. We'll see how the potatoes go this year. Maybe next year I'll be digging up more of the lawn to plant more potatoes!

christy - yes, I drilled holes in the bottom of the plastic containers with a 1/2" drillbit. I just randomly placed them a few inches apart and then also drilled a line about 1" up the sides for more drainage.

What a great idea! I am on the lookout for cardboard boxes big enough to "go upwards" with planted potatoes, but the boxes I now have going for other things are already soft and threatening to moosh down with any more watering. Just saw your plastic containers...how cool! Gosh I see those things on sale all the time...might just try it! How many potatoes do you plant per container?

(love your site...the kid pics made me grin!)

What a great idea! I think I have some old recycling bins in the basement that would be perfect for this. Thanks for the inspiration!
